BRAKE light turns on

The other day the BRAKE light comes on a few seconds after I press the brakes and shuts off after released. This happens when I apply the braked when driving and when parked. The light I am referring to is next to the seat belt light in the dash, same one as the e-brake when applied. Does this mean I need new brakes or a light bulb is out? The strange thing is that this was only happening for a day. The next morning and till now the light has not turned back on when I press the brakes. What are your suggestions? Thanks.

Check obvious/easy things first. Brake fluid level, emerg. brake (pedal) switch.

the OP's problem sounds like low fluid level. if not, clean the master cylinder cap and wires with a rag to see if it solves the problem.

agree with fire --got to check for low fluid level- that sliding thing on the inside of the cap.. is to send a message when fluid is needed!
WHEN the brake pads get low- and realllly low- more fluid has to fill the caliper, so it goes from the master cylinder and makes the signal trigger

When you push the brakes, a small amount of brake fluid moves towards the brake calipers to operate them- lowering the level further in the master.

Check the brakes and see what the real pad condition is if the res is low

i will check the fluid and clean the master cylinder cap tonight and hopefully that solves the issue. the back brakes seem like theres more than enough meat on the pads. the front, i couldnt really see the pads due the larger size of the caliper coving up the pad but will try to check again. thank you all and i will let u know the out come of this mysterious light.

fluid level or the float on the brake cap is hanging. TOp off with new fluid and clean the float and cap
