Question Brake Lamp Indicator on...

Here's the problem..
i start the car,, no problems, i go to step on the brake pedal, boom brake indicator light comes on and stays on for the duration of the car being started until i shut it off, then it "resets" until i step on the brake pedal again.

I checked all the bulbs, each one is working and pushed in all the way to the plug.

How do i get this light to not come on anymore! i don't know what else to do since everything works the way it should.

I've never had a car with a brake indicator light, so i didn't have to worry about that for inspection,, but here in NJ, they will fail you for having any lights on in your dash.

Help someone please
thanks

I get this also, from time to time - I've checked the bulbs - no problem. I've given up questioning it. Would like to hear what other have to say though.

Definitely the bulb. Believe me. the moment you apply the brake is when the system senses a low current in the line and turns on the brake lamp. If it was the brake fluid the lamp will stay on constantly. have someone stand on the back watching it for you and pay real close attention when you apply the brake; otherwise you wont see the difference between the good and the bad one. easiest way is to replace both in the back and you are done.

Question

update*

well,, i went to inspection today,, with the brake indicator on,, failed of course
no surprise there. ,, i wanted the paper that tells you what is wrong with the car,, and so it turns out that my

EMERGANCY BRAKE IS what is causing that light~! i failed for safety lol they said the brake isn't holding as strong as it should

so now my new question is,,, is it hard to adjust the E-brake yourself? do u need special tools?

second question- if it's not a matter of adjusting the e-brake cable,, then how else would you fix it? would changing the rear brake pads fix it?

The rear brake pads have nothing to do with the Parking Brake (there is no emergency brake- its only for parking!!!)
The park brake is actually a mini set of drum brakes located inside the rear rotors center hub. To inspect you remove all the rear brake hardware and bracket, remove rotor and look inside. The pads are thin and small to start with
The adjuster is a star wheel- just like normal drum brakes

Agree with acutee

I agree with acutee, it's probably a brake light. Check all three lights including the center one. If you don't see any broken ones just replace the 2 lower ones and recheck to see if the light still goes on. Once you have fixed it, you can go back to the inspection station and tell them that they were right and that you fixed the "emergency brake".

Just remember, the woman's always right whether she is or isn't......

Note the OP said the inspector says ebrake/park brake not holding as well as it should.
Sounds more like an actual test where they put the car in drive and it should not move!
Pull the wheel in back and inspect for the real problem

the problem is the ebrake is not holding,, it's not stopping the car from a roll,, they had a machine they put it on and it didn't stop when he hit the ebrake.

i watched them do the test.

This thread seams to touch on separate subjects. I am not sure if Liquidflex81 is suggesting a problem with the "Brake" lamp, or the "Brake Lamp" lamp. I am having a similar problem with the "Brake Lamp" lamp staying on. I knew one of the two upper bulbs was out, so I picked up a pair of bulbs. The bulb type is 7440.

However, after replacing the burnt bulb, the "Brake Lamp" lamp stayed lit. So I replaced the other one too, and still the lamp is lit.

In summary, I have replaced the burned out bulb but the "brake lamp" dash light remains lit.

Suggestions? -Thx

Thanks VeEzy for the update. Here is my update. I'd searched a few other threads after updating this one last night. I learned that ALL 4 of the tail light bulbs are dual-filament bulbs (7443's). What seems strange to me is that 3 of the 4 tail light bulbs were also burned out. Note: the "brake lamp" lamp never came on until one of the bulbs in the upper brake light burned out. Is it reasonable that one bulb burning out caused three of the remaining four bulbs to burn out? Or, that the other bulbs burned out over time without the dash light coming on? In the 6 years I've owned the car I have never had to replace a bulb. In any case, once I replaced one of the upper brake lights and three of the lower brake lights, the "brake lamp" lamp stays off.

dunno if this will help you or not, but mine came on about a month ago so i replaced the bulb that i saw was defective. i thought the dude at autoparts gave me the wrong type of bulb because the one i replaced continued to stay lit after i took my foot off the brake. i didnt know that all four are supposed to stay lit the whole time(whereas before the inner two were the only ones to remain lit after releasing the brake). so i guess what i'm trying to say is that the brake lamp on the dash didnt come on until the 3rd of 4 lamps on my car began to burn out.
