Airbag Assembly plastic coming off

Hi all,

I have a 2nd Gen, 2003 TL base. The plastic on the airbag assembly (where you press the horn) has gotten really soft, so soft that it scratches off very easily with my fingernail. The color is med taupe but when I scratch it (accidentally) it reveals the black plastic underneath.

I'd like to fix it without spending $650 to replace the whole airbag and without compromising the integrity of the airbag. As a matter of fact the steering wheel is looking pretty worn too so I'm open to replacing it as well.

Any tips are appreciated. I've searched the forums and google and can't find anyone else with this issue.

Thanks.

You mean the color is coming off? or the material itself is coming apart?

If its the later you are kinda screwed as that cover is part of the airbag and cant be replaced.

The material itself, the plastic is mushy. If my nail scratches it while driving, it comes off like clay and the gook is stuck under my nail. Not to mention the whole thing is sticky, so hair and dust stick to it and won't come off with wiping. Actually if I wipe it with cleaner and a paper towel, remnants of the paper towel stick to LOL.

you could try going to the dealer and see what they say? You might get lucky and they might cover it as a defect of the airbag?
