Accesories Plug no current when the ingnition is off?

Are power ports suppose to have have no current when the car is off? Its real annoying plugung the cell phone up and when you shut the car off the phone still does not charge. If so is there any way i can fix so it does not go off?

i only know of two cars from my personal experience that the accessory port does not shut off when the ignition is off: ford taurus SHO and chevy beretta. every other car i've been in shuts the accessory port off.

i'd kind of like to have it live all the time as well. i imagine you could bypass the ignition easily enough but i don't have the wiring diagrams so i wouldn't really know where to start. the memory seat is on all the time. theoretically you could clip the leads from the accessory port and use an "add-a-circuit" to fuse it to the memory seats. then it would be on all the time.

try wiring the power from like the radio connection, the one that stays on to keep the memory for the radio, and maybe that will keep the power source on. i have thought about doing that myself.

NONONO, much better way to do it than that. There's a relay that you can remove and safely replace with a jumper wire. Don't worry, its still on a fuse. I did this to my car, and it works fine. Cutting wires voids warranty's and is messy, and a pain in the ass. This way is much easier to do and undo. Be warned though that having your outlets on without the engine on can drain your battery if there are things plugged in to them.

That being said, lets begin:
1) The MICU Multiplex Integrated Control Unit is located behind the drivers side left kick panel. See ftp://acurazine:acurazine@txrx.dyndn...utletMod/1.jpg

2) Open and remoge the fuse door

3) There are two plastic fastners that hold the kickpanel in place, one is hidden. The blue one in my pic is a mild hassle, but I got if off by pulling and wiggling at it. Scientific huh?

4) When it comes loose, you can pull it in towards the center of the car some and it will come loose. See ftp://acurazine:acurazine@txrx.dyndn...utletMod/2.jpg

5) This is the relay that when powered, allowes the power outlets to have power.

6) Remove the relay with a Pair of pliers.

7) Find some medium-heavy wire. I used 14 gague from an old power cord I had laying around.

8) Cut off a piece about 4 inches long, and strip 1/4 to 3/8th inch of insulation off the ends.

9) Crimp one of these babies on each end, and you've got one badass jumper. (Anyone have a crimper to donate?)

10) Plug your jumper where the relay was, in these two larger, circled slots. I don't know what would happen if you put it in the wrong ones, but it wouldn't keep the power outlet on, i can tell you that much.

11) Here's mine in place.. I ended um pushing the wires flat against the other relays so the kickpanel was easier to put back on. The kickpanel can be a b1tch to put back, so here's a tip. Use one hand, or a sturdy sheet of paper to keep the weather stripping above the kickpanel until it is in place. It is most irritating when you have it almost all the way back on, and the damn gasket sucks itself back under.

Also: here's a manual page on the MICU and what its connectors do. The black one is the one you just replaced with the wire.

I do have to give credit to lowws6 where it's due. Reading his post got me up off my but to make this one. How-to section anyone? Let me know how this works for you.

The only thing I would be worried about with that is exploding cell phones/batteries.

I'll find out soon enough if that happens. I have a moto razr with a new battery (the oem one didn't last 8 hours a charge. Currently, the phone is in the front cd-storage area, charging permanently.

Oh, and I just noticed something, this thread is in the 2nd gen area (whoops), I've got a 3rd gen. Hopefully the MICU hasn't changed much.
