99 TL- Starting up and dying- Please help

99 TL
130,0000 miles

Really unfortunate news to have an issue with this after getting the tranny rebuilt. But I drove the car home today, everything was fine. An hour later I went to start it, turned key, fired, seems okay for one second, then the RPMs drop, it shutters, and then shuts off.

Any ideas?

Hey Nollid, if ya were not experiencing any such problems prior to the tranny being recently rebuilt......then something may have been overlooked by the shop when installing the tranny. Chances are that it's a simple connection or ground not hooked up.

Take it back and have them fix the car under your warranty. They should be glad to help ya and honor their pride of workmanship with the rebuild.

Quick update: I went to fire it up again to get some error code, and to my surprise it started up. The code I got was P1738. So yes, tranny related.

Do you think this would be covered under my rebuild warranty? What would be the cost if not?

Thanks,
D

Edit: sorry just saw your post. Sorry, after rereading my original post, I made it sound like I had the transmission replaced today. The rebuild was about six weeks. Either way, shouldn't change what you said about it being covered as it is a 4yr/50,000 warranty. But, I wanted to ask, is it odd there were no issues for 6 weeks? Not sure how to proceed as it started up fine just now after trying a couple of times. Can't not go to work tomorrow, but can't risk getting stuck in the parking lot at 5:00pm if it does not start like it was doing three hours ago. Thanks again.

Do the lights on the dash stay on after the engine quits ?
If they don't you may have a faulty ignition switch, its common for the 99.

P1738 = A problem within the 2nd Clutch Pressure Switch Circuit.
This should be covered by your warranty for the rebuilt tranny.

But, with the starting issue.....chances are that ErickUa5 is right on about checking the ignition switch. The part is less than $100 and isn't difficult to install. If ya do drive the car and it won't start .....try jiggling the key around while attempting to start the car. Ya also should try to have the electrical starting/charging system load tested at any auto parts store usually for free.

Thanks again. Another quick question, is there a way to check to see if the ignition switch is the culprit? Besides it randomly dying for the second time and the dash lights being on?

Ya could probably check the switch if the contacts look burnt, worn or corroded.
That's why wiggling it may temporarily find a sweet spot to make it work.

The '99 TL's are notorious for bad ignition switches, most have either been replaced by recall or previous owner at some point in time. Maybe it's worth spending a few bucks on to eliminate the switch as the problem. Could save ya a bit of grief if left stranded and needing a tow !

Check the many previous related threads and the "DIY" sticky for more info.

Okay, will order it tonight.

Quick update: I started the car multiple times today without any issues, but I noticed the check engine light blinks 10 times. Any idea what this means?

The blinking "CEL" may mean that your car has went into a default limp mode.
Have the codes read to determine the cause.

IMO, ya should take it back to the tranny rebuilder and have them check things out for ya.

Good question: When I noticed the CEL, I cleared the codes, started it up a couple times, and did not get any new codes, just blinking CEL 10x.

Yes, definitely taking the car back to the tranny rebuilder when I have time; does not help they are open only while I am at work.

To be safe, I wanted to verify that this ignition switch is okay. Or if the community usually goes with a different brand for some reason..

You need to call your local Acura dealer and speak with a service advisor. Be nice, speak friendly, listen attentively. Have your VIN # handy. Ask him/her if they would be willing to check and see if the ignition recall has been done to this vehicle.

With all the hell GM is getting from the general public, the media, and Congress, from their defective ignition switches, I'm more than sure that Acura would be willing to help you.

My wife had a problem with her ignition switch on her 2000 Honda Civic back in 2007. It died on her on the freeway while she was driving. After a quick diag on the phone with her, I called the nearest Honda dealer, and spoke with the parts guy. When he heard my story, he immediately transferred me over to a supervisor. The Honda dealer sent out a tow truck, picked up my wife and her car, brought her back to the dealer, gave her a loaner car, and repaired the ignition switch....FREE OF CHARGE !!

The Civic was way out of warranty, with 125,000 miles on it, but the dealer stood by their product, and in my eyes, that's worth a customer for life.

Thanks for the info. I asked about the part because I feel as if buying the part and doing it myself might be more convenient than getting to the dealer while they are open, and dropping the car off, not having a ride thus and waiting around not knowing how long I am going to be there.
