99 TL Headlight bulb replacement

Hey Guys, I have a question about the headlight bulbs. Is it normal to cost about $125 a piece!!! I had one go out and the dealer said it would be that much just for the bulb. I can do it myself, but where can I find a bulb, especially for cheaper than that.

Thanks,
Chris

I thought the 6000K bulbs didn't light the road up as well as the stock 4300K bulbs. Is that the case?

That is the case but its a very minimal difference.... On the flip side, if u went with 12000k bulbs, you would see the huge difference in lighting!
** Plus the 6000k look alot better the the stock 4300k **

Talking

I did install them last Saturday....
it took about 20 min. to install both......
there are forums on here that tell u to remove alot of things in order for you to access the bulbs but that is not the case....

for example.
Passanger side:
get the right screwdriver (i think its called a hex?)
remove the screw thats over the headlight on the black box...
remove the black box and u will see the bulb.. take out the plug from the headlight and remove the clip and bulb will come out...... put new bulb in, put pin back in, and box back over the bulb and put the screw back on!

Drivers side:
Remove the black cover by pulling out the 2 pins holding it on....
now u will see the same screw as u did on the passanger side and do what u did on the other side and u are back in business!!!

The screw driver is the what I need, a hex is required but my screw has a little nub in the center that prevents a regular hex bit to fit.

I went to sears and bought a "tamper resistant" star screwdriver bit. Cheap and worked perfectly.

Thanks for the helpful info!

And here's an older thread with several comments on the brightness of the 6000K bulbs relative to the stock 4300K bulbs.

Here are some of them:

- I'm sure many of you may experienced this, but my 6000K bulbs are not as bright as I would of hoped. I knew they would be slightly less bright than stock 4300K but there is a noticeable difference.

- I know you get the cool effect of the lights being blue but trust me you wont be able to see anything when it rains.

- Not impressed with 6000k. ...the new 6000k ones have significantly less output

Are you saying the 12000K are not bright at all? I was told from someone else that actually has them, that they are so bright they are not legal. I want to get them , but before i do i need to know if they are worth it. One person says they are barely bright, the other says they are too bright and are not legal...

I know the person who said 12000K are brighter than stock is not true.
4300K has the brightest light output. 6000K is ok too but if you get 12000K, you will lose a lot of light.
Think about it. 12000K is purple. 4300K is bright yellow, and 6000 is crystal white with blue hint.
Do you think the purple light is brighter than yellow or white? I don't think so

I agree with you on everything else except the part ' 4300k is bright yellow '... 4300-4600 Kelvins HID is Rising White.. aka Milky White with a very slight bluish tint!... There's absolutely no yellow or even a slight hint of it..

I've used, installed, and seen pretty much the entire range from 4000 - 12000 K HIDs and I wouldn't touch a 12K HID kit, retro fit or replacement bulb..

I wouldn't recommend anything over 6500K .. 8/10/12K may look good.. but the usability suffers big time.. Honestly, I don't even like that purple look..

IMO, stick with the factory HID bulbs.. I just got my TL and haven't looked at the bulb yet.. but it looks like a 4300K or close.. 6000K if really want that blue look.. but plz don't go over that..

For those that have replaced the HID bulbs, did you disconnect the battery first?

The TL service manual recommends this step but I like to avoid it if possible.

i'm not condoning changing light bulbs without disconnecting the battery but when i changed them out my battery was still connected... granted the car had been off for a while, i guess that was enough time for the ballasts to be discharged.

Thanks for the info!

If I don't disconnect the battery, I'll also let the car sit for a while.
