2001 TL transmission finally gave out. Where to get it fixed?
The transmission had been slipping every once in a while for the past two years, but it finally gave out yesterday in the middle of the road. It only has ~148k miles. Brand new set of tires. Just replaced a bunch of fluids and the battery. So I definitely want to fix the issue instead of getting rid of the car.
The engine stopped working as I made a turn and started to drive uphill. As the gear started to change, I heard a clunk and the car stopped accelerating and the engine finally stopped running. I called the police and got a jump start (even though my battery is new, I didn't think it was a transmission issue). The engine started up fine, but the car would not move after I put it into gear. When the tow truck towed my truck home, he realized the car would no longer go into Park and told me it was most likely a transmission issue because of that.
The dealer is asking upwards of $5,000 for parts and labor. Has anyone else had the transmission replaced in a 1999-2003 TL? Who did you go to? How was the experience/was the price fair?

148 on an original trans is very good! many of us suffered clutch probs with it at 50-100kmiles!
If its the trans and not a simple prob of broken axle =
the BEST option is toss out that old junk and install a much better design, accord trans from junkyard
See the thread in main gen2 area for what years are best
Its almost plug and play, 1 hole has to be drilled iirc, but should cost $500-750 for trans and about the same for installation
ck that thread out AFTER you find out whats really wrong
failure to move at all or refuse to go into park is often the axle = $100!
typical failure is clutches slipping between 2nd and 3rd shift, as if it were a manual trans with bad clutch

did you ever change the trans fluid? what color and smell does it have now?

I have seen on the 200k tl thread that people are doing 4-5 trannies
If it's 3k a pop does it make sense to spend that much money on such high mileage cars ?
Not knockin th OP but generally curious what you guys do with these constant expensive replacement not to mention being stranded

DO NOT REBUILD YOUR TRANS OR GET A DEALERSHIP UNIT!!!
Its now the time for the AV6 Swap! Look into it! Less than 2K will forever fix the trans issue.
That obviously if its in fact your trans.. As TLer trash said sound like an Axle pop off?

iirc there is a clip that secures the axle in place that could have popped
Generally when its trans failure you know its been slipping between gears.
Some transmission malaise can be cured with cleaning or replacement of a few solenoids, a new filter and fluid change to the ` modern` spec DW-1 atf
Back in the day the options on repairing the trans were few and way overpriced
Now you can throw in an used -but improved- trans from another member of the Honda family
Reasonable price when you look at ownership cost over the several years most of us have our TL

So the engine died as well and you needed a jump? Double check that the battery/charging system is good. A bad trans wouldnt cause that.
As for the trans, Check to see if one of the axles broke. If it is indeed a trans issue. DONT go to the dealer or waste your time on a rebuild. Get yourself a 06-07 Accord V6 trans. They are reliable and bolt right up. You just have to swap over a few sensors from yours to make it work.

and we have a thread showing how to do it all

Based on the facts my guess is some kind of internal failure in the trans leading to TC failure. Maybe the TC locked up and killed the engine.
Anyway, as everyone else has said, stay away from those jerks at the dealership. They're licking their chops hoping you'll take the bait. You should be able to pick up a V6 transmission from a '06-'07 honda accord from a junkyard around ~$7-800 and have it installed for another ~$700. Then your car will last until (and probably through) Armageddon.

When you break/lose/slip out an axle you'll just rev and grinding noises happen. It will move in park as well. I popped out an axle test driving and also broke an axle when my ball joint came off over a speed hump. If it just revs and makes grinding noises thats your problem. If not definitely do the AV6 swap. The DIY here is spot on and I just used it to swap my trans out that died at 88,000+. A few hundred miles later and its still pristine. I spent 750 on the trans and added some other parts, replaced some broken trans mounts and sway links plus the broken axle and ball joint. I still came out at 1/3 the price of most shops that do good work.

Axle still doesn't explain the engine stalling
