2000 TL turns over but won't start

Hi Guys,

I have a 2000 TL 3.2 with 100,700 miles. It sat over the holiday weekend and wouldn't start yesterday morning. I could use some help trouble shooting as I have tried all that I can think of. Here is the situation:

-Car turns over with lots of power-its not the battery
-green key light blinks 7 times when key is turned to on
- I have disconnected battery to attempt resetting
-main relay clicks when key is turned on
-fuel pump makes noise when key turned on
-pulled a plug and it has good spark when turned over
-when key is turned on, check engine light is on for 1-2 seconds
-I have check fuses in both fust panels, all look good
-I am using the same key I always use and do not have a spare
-I used the remote lock/unlock
-I replaced the main relay near steering column

Thanks in advance for any advice, I'm at my whit's end!!

all I can think is remove the inspection covers for the timing belt near the cams
if its broken the belt- you now also have bent valves
that would explain spark- fuel- no start

Also, the car did have a low rpm miss for awhile before this starting issue came up.

remove the small `inspection covers` for the tinming belt--if belt is broken and cam is not moving--end of story

Silly, I know, but- You have plenty of fuel? Is fuel getting to the injectors?- caution, high pressure, be careful.

I checked the timing belt. It turns over when the engine is cranked. Unless it jumped a cog....

I just sprayed a squirt of starting fluid in the airbox and the car fired. I am guessing now that I am looking at a fuel delivery problem.

Is there a relay or electrical item I should check first?

How do I check for fuel pressure?

How hard is it to replace an injector?

There is a relay, etc. to test. And a fuel press. check. Unfortunately the electronic version of the shop manual I have is protected so I can't copy and post the info. Send me a PM & I could scan those pgs. of the hard copy I have and send them to you.

Or, you can try this (section 11):http://home.comcast.net/~amberlani01/ServiceManual.pdf

Hope this helps. Good luck.

That would be great if you could send that to me. I am a new member so it won't let me pm you. You could send it to my spam email account dootsie101@hotmail.com.

Thanks a ton

if the tensioner failed and the timing belt jumped a cog- you would know it right away--
and it probably wouldnt happen while the car was parked~

look at under-hood fuse boxes for fuel pump relay and fuel pump fuse
I dont know where to look other than read the lids to each box

Did you look at the online manual (link in post #11)? It's a working link & it's the same info as I have. Post back again if you want the pages scanned & sent.

it fired up with starter fluid
how long before it died? seconds or a minute

since it ran, I would go to fuel pump relay and fuse as most likely- best place to start

Problem Solved

I finally fixed this annoying problem. I just cranked the motor over for more than a minute and it finally started. I think maybe the fuel line wasn't primed??? It was the main relay all along.

Thanks everyone for the input.

Yes, it was the main relay. It had a half tank of gas the whole time.

Is this the main relay box just under the driver side dash marked Mitsuba RZ-158?
This is often the culprit when engine cranks but will not run per a honda mechanic friend.

Hey Reaper101.....what all have ya tried so far ?

First thing would be attempting to narrow down the problem being either electrical or fuel related. Have ya checked all the wiring and interlocks ? Are ya getting fuel up to the injectors ? Details provided within the Factory Service Manual would be helpful with troubleshooting this issue. IMO.

Otherwise, ya may need some professional assistance, IDK ???

It was working just fine I had lent it to my lil sister since I bought a 04 tl but I needed some things from it so I brought it home all I did was take out my 0 gauge wire for my amp than 4 hours later she asks if she can use it I tell her yes and when she try's to turn it on it just rolls over but doesn't catch as the previous member mentioned he used carb choke so did I it would turn on but only like 3 secs did this like 8 times till I gave up

Lol I think it's the fuel pump, my brother came over and looked at it, he sprayed carb choke in and as long as he kept shooting small doses of carb choke it stayed on he checked the fuel pump fuse but it wasn't blown he checked the fuel line and there wasn't any fuel coming through

Years ago, I had experienced a similar situation on another car, everything appeared ok ...except the fuel pump wouldn't activate.

Stupid me, replaced the pump and it was still acting the same....long story short, it ended up being a bad relay for the fuel pump. So, before actually replacing the rather expensive pump....check the relay and the electrical connections first.
