2000 TL misfire

the CEL on my TL has been coming on and going off for the past couple of months but the car has been running fine... Tonight the CEL started blinking and the car is running very rough, like a misfire.

I had the trans replaced about a year ago at which time the mech told me I had a misfire code on the # 5 cylinder which he said was a bad coil pack. From reading the forums here it sounds like something I can fix except IDK which is the number 5 cylinder???

Realize you stated a 2000 on the 3G Forum, but looking into the engine while standing in front of the car:

firewall
123
456
radiator

firing order is 1-4-2-5-3-6

Okay I switched out the # 5 coil. Car is doing the same thing. And, there is a weird smell after the car is running for a little while. This car was running fine last night...

Should I also replace the spark plug at the same time?

So after following advice in some of the threads here I took the allen bolts out of the coil packs and started the process of elimination. I started the car then removed the coil packs one at a time while the car was running. I pulled out #4 and noticed a clicking sound while I was pulling so I figured this one had a connection. I pulled out # 6 and no noise. I replaced the # 6 coil pack and car runs great! reset ecu by pulling the clock fuse and I am ready to go...

BTW, the # 5 looked bad, it was very discolored... but it wasn't the bad one.

Thank you everyone on this site... you have saved me a lot of $$$
