Unhappy 2000 air conditioner/ventilation system "click, click" sound

Hi,

My TL is making some "click click click" noise from the AC when I first start it up. After about 30 seconds or so the noise goes away. It sounds like something in the ventilation system is skipping a gear or something. I noticed that even though the ventilation mode is set to "face" position it is actually blowing like half and half (down). So it seems like the AC is trying to move the blowing position to "face" but something is not right. Have anyone experienced this problem? Is it a quick/inexpensive fix? Interesting how all AC problems seem to happen when it is 95+ degrees outside. Even worst I am thinking about selling the car next week and I can't give test drives with that horrible noise.. buyers will probably want 1k discount for it..

Any help is appreciated..

thanks
Carlos

First thing I would do is check the cabin air filter.

I had leaves and dust and crud all inside the housing- which the fan sits in
See thread on easy 20$ 20 minute DIY on cabin air filters

The various doors that direct the airflow are vac powered and may be doing
just as you think and skipping a gear

Did you normally or recently have the fan on 5 and change flow direction settings?
Thats a killer- hi airspeed while parts in motion

Does it do it only with AC or just vents too?

let me see.. I always have the FAN on High (5) and coldest setting if that is what you mean.. about changing flow direction settings I know a little someone (2yr old) that likes to press all buttons and may have done it.. :-/ :-) I think it does it only with AC on.. I will have to double check/troubleshoot more...

What is interesting is that if it is something skipping why would it give up after 20 seconds or so.. then problem happens again when I re-start the car..

I will check the cabin air filter..

thanks for the input/hints

I think it is that motor under the passenger side dash. I have the same problem. If you cut the car on and then look under there you will see where that noise is comeing from. That motor is like 135 bucks at the dealer.

I think you are right it is some sort of motor but on the driver side.. It has some sort of blue plug. I will have to take a more detailed look with a flashlight. I guess I guess will have to pull this off and try my luck at an used part store.

The noise happens with both the AC on or OFF. Once the noise goes off I can make it happen again by changing the mode to FACE circulation regardless if the AC is ON/OFF.

sounds like a door has either something stuck- like a leaf, or switching it around with fan on high has messed up the drive gear teeth

That motor your messing with is one of the ones I need to change. My vent selector is jacked up. Air Blows from all vents. And the motor on the passenger side is jacked too. My car is falling apart!!

Okay I went to the dealer and talked to the guy that works there. He said before buying the motor try to see if leaves and various other objects are in there causeing the door to hang up. The motor under the glove box is the air mixer motor. And when mine went bad it bade a clicking sound while I was changing the temp from 60 to 90 slowly. I replaced that myself just a few screws. The one on the drivers side that sits up and down is the motor that control the air flow through the vents. Mine wouldn't change the air flow but I found that my connector wasn't plugged all the way in. After I did that it worked.
