My Carputer

I built this over the summer and made a thread in ramblings but thought I would make one here as well. I would have pictures of the car but it needs a paint job first and I probably wont do it till January or Tax time. So for now heres the computer, 7 inch touch screen, Pioneer Head unit Set to Aux, and Fiberglass work that I need to sand down and redo but I am way too lazy since school started. I am running windows XP home edition but have custom settings so it will load to "Road Runner" a freeware program made buy a guy over at mp3car.com that intergrates my Audio, Video, Music, and GPS to one easy big touchable program. It has Wifi so usually when I am on campus I can search the net or Wardrive. Cost me around $700 since I did it all my self. It is set to an auto start up and shutdown controller so the Ignition starts everything and when you turn it off the computer goes into Hibernate so when you go back in it takes around 15 secs to start up. It has a 6 second delay so it will survive cranks and so you can cut the ignition to turn off your car then turn it again when you are at a gas station.

First 2 pictures are new the last ones are when I was just installing it using my parents old camera. I still need to clean it up because the fabrication was a rush job and I put it in too early and it wasn't dry enough so there are smudges/cracks in the paint. A quick sand/fiberglass job then repaint should do it. Everything from the headunit up is custom. This was my first time ever trying to fabricate or use spray paint so meh.

pictures with my new camera... (if you are wondering about the bolts...I am not done fabricating down there so they are holding som compents in place for now)

This is my USB wifi Adapter..

Old Desktop

GPS (Iguidance with a $30 ebay usb GPS mouse)

GPS mouse placement in back window

How it looked for 2 weeks driving around

Sidenote: It looks crooked but it's actually not. The car molding itself is not perfectly even so there is no way I could make it look exactly right. Plus I was thinking of added some fake buttons on side of the screen or just blanks in case I want to add something later. It looks to bland for my taste.

I love carputers!!!! You should look into getting that kit customized to make it look more stock. Still looks good though.

Rock on for another carputer. I've got one in my 97.

For the person who asked about the price, mine ran $700-$1000, I have never added it up.

internet access never gets used. It's only for one thing really, to transfer files between my home computer and my carputer. I have an FTP setup so I can just move files back and forth.

I use it mostly for GPS (Points of interest come in really handy) and Music...i have 152 albums on it.

-Slimline laptop DVD/CD-+R
-40 GB HD
-Via M10k MoBo C3 1.0 Ghz processor
-RoadRunner DashBoard
-Xenarc 700TSV 7’’ TFT LCD Monitor w/ VGA & Touch Screen
-Carnetix Auto shutdown/startup controller

Future Mods
-Resand/Repaint (I am not sure what kind of paint I want but this paint just looks too dull)
-Add a USB hub with Card reader under the head unit
-Might Move the GPS reciever outside
-Reinforce Dash with Metal and Hex Screws so if someone does steal it they will have a fun time removing it
-Move the computer or make some kind of hiding space for it

I will take some more pictures today.
My shiftknob is a Razo Shift Knob...I believe its called the Executive.

i started a thread asking about this, and no one really came up with answers, so i'm gonna ask here. heh, hope you frequent this thread.
didn't you lose the bose sound system with an aftermarket deck? I was told that if you take the stock double din out, you can't use the stock bose system. That was one of my concerns. did you fab the trim piece/plate for the screen? or did you buy it? I know you said fab, but i figured you had fabbed something else...

You can still use the stock bose system. Most people lose the stock sub but there is a way around it. I replaced the stock sub amp with a regular single channel amp and now my stock sub works again.

Metra is probably your best bet.
