i did almost the same thing, i painted it a glossy black with a clear coat, all around the sides and everything, then i got bored of it after a while because it looked too plain, so i sanded the top down to the "off white" color and made sure all the sanded grooves were straight(brushed aluminum effect), and it gave it a 3d effect because of the black on the sides and inside, ill post pictures 2morro...
^^^^^ yeah post that picture man...we would like to see it. Or should I say I would like to see it. I need to do something with mine. Some old lady had the car before I bought it...so its all scratched up. When ever I get some free time on my hands, I will paint it.

what i did was just sanded the top part and left the inside of the plate the original color that it was normally painted and keep the paint on the sides of the plate.. and it looks really clean once you do it..

Dont worry, this comes apart so easily, dig your figernails under the outer trim of the shift gate and pull up, once that has come apart you can easily remove the shiftplate by pulling up on it. with the light module everything comes apart just by pulling it up it should reveal the bulb, then just simply replace the bulb with the LED.

So if you have a 1999 TL, you can soak the shift plate in some paint remover and it will reveal the chrome. But from 2000 on, they just used a black plastic shift plate. And although the 1999 shift plate fits in 2000-2003 TLs, since the 1999 was a 4-speed, it's missing one of the shift gates that is in the 2000-2003 (the 1 position).

to remove it you are going to have to remove the shift nob, then once that is removed, pop out the outer piece by popping it out with your fingers or use a flat head screw driver, then pop out the shift plate.
