Question 18" Wheels on 2002 TL-S...

Okay, using a tire size calculator, it says to upgrade from 215/50/17's (stock on TL-S) to 18" rims, the closest match is to go to 235/40/18's. Do these not fit? Why has everyone here that has 18's gone to 225/40/18??? Here's the chart http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html
Thoughts?

It might be too wide to fit of you lowered the car..But I do know there a few guys here running 18's or 19's with 235's...realistically, the optimal size based on stock TL's 205/60/16 is 215/45/18..

What is realistic for stock TL-S, with 215/50/17's? I'm only dropping it about an inch, so nothing crazy...

i just got my blitz techno's (18x8, 45offset)with 235/40's installed...on h&r sport springs. only rub in the back but not as much..i just rolled the fender a bit last nite and it doesn't rub anymore...i think it rubbed due to the offset and not the tires...anybody know how to fill in tiny hairline cracks on the car's paint? i think i rushed the rolling procedure and caused a few small very thin cracks on the edge of the fender...will touchup work?

v6pwr,

How much did they run you if you don't mind me asking? I am trying to price out rims, and I figure all the good ones are like $800 each. YIKES! Just curious. Excellent choice.

The +1 size for our stock rims is 215/50-17
so you should aim for the +2 size of 225/40-18

If you want to stay with 215s then your safest bet is what Ed said. Your Diameter will be slightly bigger though, but your speedo will be almost exact.

If you opt for the +2 size your speedo will be slightly faster by 1.5% which is really nothing (80mph/1.015 = 78.81 mph actual)
and your tires will have less of a chance of rubbing the fenders and you'll have less of a chance of getting a ticket.

tlwiz, the wheels alone were close to 3k..and the bad thing was i waited since december for the wheels to come and they're just on my car last week. most people seem to base on assumption/"rumors" that 18x8 won't fit and that 235/40's will rub like mad...but i wanted to see for myself(i had no choice i guess, since i've been drooling over these wheels for 4 years). the wheels are 45 offset, no clearance probs..only slightly where the plastic bumper screws on to the fender part. i just trimmed the sharp plastic corner off and rolled the top fender a bit just in case, and it clears perfectly with 235/40's..and it looks mean and fat!!
oh, i go home on weekends and tested to see how off the odo was...with stock, it takes exactly 100miles to reach destination...with 235/40's 102miles..so for every 100 miles, i lose 2 miles from having a smaller diameter tire. i bet 225/40's will be even worst...

With a 48 offset you "should" be fine with 235's.
