NGK Iridium are very good (among the very best) and you dont change wires in our cars like some others because there are coil packs on each cylinder, so you only replace them if they go bad

Denso Iridiums are also good, albeit a bit more expensive than the NGKs.

Denso Iridium has a smaller center electrode 0.4mm vs NGK's 0.7mm. Denso's web has dyno result showing 4 hp max gain on a Civic http://www.densoiridium.com/dynochart.php?id=1
Smaller center electrode reduces voltage requirement but have less Iridium to wear off. Denso recommends to change their Ir plug at 30K interval. I have NGK Iridium, it last longer than Denso.

what determines this difference in the longevity of the spark plug?

See Denso FAQ
Q. How long will Iridium Last?
A. Iridium use represents the most significant technological advance in automotive spark plug manufacturing, since platinum was introduced in the early eighties. As vehicle manufacturers produce increasingly complex and efficient automobiles, there is a greater need for long-life plugs that can tolerate leaner fuel mixtures and improved combustion processes. DENSO has responded to this need by developing its Iridium alloy, originally for OE applications. For example, many newer Lexus’ and Toyota models carry an ultra long-life Iridium plug variation (.7mm with platinum tipped ground) that is capable of up to 120,000 miles of service. DENSO Iridium Power plugs, with their .4mm center electrode, have been developed for performance applications. Because gradual wear will “round-off” firing points over time, the concentrated firing power and voltage requirement benefits will be reduced. For this reason, DENSO advises replacement after 30,000 miles.

NGK IX? Thats a good deal for 6 of them. 0.6 is not bad.

At a local auto parts store they are 41.76 before tax.

I have denso iridium's in my car and felt no difference at all when I installed them. I will go with NGK iridium's next time. I don't understand why Denso's are twice as expensive. When I bought them I bought into the notion they would give me more power as they advertized. If they did it is so minimal and for the price I would have got NGK's if I could go back in time. BTW when changing plugs what are signs that you might have a bad coilpack? I just want to know I have no reason to believe I have a bad one.

What do you mean? If your looking for plugs, gust get the OEM NGK Plugs. They will last the longest and you wont see any benefits from performance plugs.

Natural progression like technological advancements or a new manufacturing process that makes a plug better than the rest. For instance from Platinum to Iridium.

No there are no updates. the OEM plug is about the best bet. It lasts the longest.
