New Intake Options

I've been doing alot of searching and researching on the TL intake systems available. I've found that there are a few pricey good ones (AEM and Injen) and of coarse the cheap knock offs when it comes to piping and filter intakes.

I build alot of turbo kits, mostly locally, where I do all the fab work of the charge piping myslef. I mostly do the 88-91 kits since there is knowone other than Full Race that makes a true 88-91 Civc/CRX kit. Anyway, I began looking at my TL today and I can easily make a quality intake that will fit and perform just as good as the AEM. My concern is, is the market really open to custom intake or are the TL owners hooked on the "big name"? I can build and stock these 3-4 at a time, both short ram, cold air (2 piece) and a cold air 1 piece). All of which would use a true K&N filter, not a cheapo. I'd use T Bolts instead of worm clamps. Gates reinforced couplers instead of the weaker silicone ones (won't rip and cause boost leaks...which is irrelevant here...but anyway) All for a little more than the EBAYS but less than the AEM (by far). I'm just throwing the idea out to see if anyone would be interested. I quickly cut and tapped one today to fit on my car (the short) and will make the lower half probably tomorrow if I get free. I'll probably make a full 1 piece cold air as well.

I'd also like to do an intake that uses the stock air box and drop in K&N w/ a velocity stack at the bottom. (an alternative to the Icebox)

I don't think we're all stuck on name. But, we are stuck on quality, which is why we stick to the names we have.

yea..if it's good quality, and it has proven gains as well as AEM, Injen, or the Comptech Icebox..I think it'd be a hot item to sell here.

I'm looking for something the same as the Comptech Icebox, but most likely will end up with the Injen. Piping is piping, so as long as the quality is good and the size is correct I'd buy it.

2.5" is what I'm using.

I'll definately dyno it. I need to pick up a stock air box filter. I may be able to get it on as early as next Wednesday.

I'd also like to add (in ref. to a PM from the Mod here). I can supply any pics or info needed (dyno, sound clips, pics, vids, whatever) to enure that this would go 100% smooth with 100% satisfaction from the potential customers. I am not a sponsor here yet, but will possibly soon become one if the interest is there in these parts once the tests, dynos and prices are all put out there. I now know that there has been someone on here in the past that did not follow though on the intake builds, but I assure you that I'm not like that person. I will stande behind any build, or any part I build 100%.

Again, feel free to ask any Q's.
Thank you for your time.

If you make an intake like the AEM v2 for the type S you would have a ton of buyers.

I could easily do it in a 2 piece, I could do it as well in a one piece. If that one is really more popular then I could start on it before I start the Icebox one.

Does anyone know the exact diameter of the larger piping of the V2??

I've got my "V2" laid out, (it will have it's own name). I will do it before the Icebox. I have to place a supply order and get what I need coming. I'm pretty excited about it, I think my "V2" will kick azz? It will have a nicer transition between diameters.

I would be interested in one if the price was right. The "V2" would be nice for my 99 TL-P.

It seems that's where the main interest is, I am definately going to get on it and get one posted up. I'll have to makean order on a few specific pieces, but I doubt it will be a problem at all. I have it drawn out as I want it.

I basically finished the 1st 2 piece. The fitment is excellent IMO. I'd make a few minor changes to it if I can get them moving. I could easily make it one piece, but as a 2 piece you have the cold air/short ram option. The "V2" will be he definate 1 piece.

I took a few driving vids, but my "cameraman" wasn't the best at working my digi cam so the incar vids really sucked.

Here are a few pics...

i'd go for a V2 style one, but what about the mounting brackets? good sturdy mounting brackets that line up right are a must. Can you show us some pics of them?

The bracket for the CAI is fairly simple, it's in the pic and vid. That one doesn't weigh much at all and doesn't move at all.
I'll weld the bracket for the "V2" style. I was looking to put the bracket right above the fender hole using the OE bolt hole there. This intake will have a bit of weight to it and work going into it. I want it to be 100% efficieant and still keep the price well below AEM.
TL will be 2.5" to 3"
TL-S will be 2.75"-3"

The "Icebox" won't need brackets, though I may add one to the lower part to mount to the frame. I have to check for available holes tomorrow to see.

I do have a price figure but ca't discuss it yet (advised not t o by the mods). I'd also much rather show pics to help justify my pricing. The price will be considerably less than the "V2". I am investing in pieces to make the V2s (that I don't usually use when making charp pipes) so I'm hoping it really works out well. The order won't be in till next week w/ the 3" pieces so I won't have pics of the "V2" style till next week.

I am going to try to wrap up the mocking of the Icebox today. I actually thought it would have gained the most interest instead of the V2, but hey, I'm more than happy to do them all.

I just finished mocking up the 2nd one. Personally, I love it. It's a bit quieter than the cold air, but I think it will work great with the velocity stack (about to go driving now). At idle you can hit the throttle a little and still feel the air pull prett hard through the stack, which is right behind the bumper. If the opening in the bumper was cut out it would be sitting right in sight. I snapped some pics...

the AWV1 (cold air right before I removed it)
fairly quiet at low RPMs, but roars up high (not to sound ricerish but if you love to hear VTEC, this makes it sound similar to a B16 w/ a CAI and HyTech header [< I've done one] ) blaring almost.

The AWV2 ("IceBox)
Top view, painted black would look fairly stock

Bumper off...
V stack (I will use a straight 3" instead of 2.5" for the lower on all the others, and also weld the piece)

I didn't bother taking a pic of the K&N drop in, figured everyone knew what it looks like.

Did you make that using the OEM air box? It's all looking good so far.

Yes, stock air box. It's basically a conversion kit to retain the stock box.
It is much quieter than the AWV1 Cold Air, probably half the sound, but still accelerates great with it.

These 2 will definately be put back to back on the dyno.

After you dyno, I am pretty much going to purchase the "Icebox" from you. I'd rather not go with the Injen if I can retain my factory box.

Sounds good, I'm just trying to get some dyno time schedu;ed in to run the first 2 versions while I wait on parts from a few suppliers.

The AWV2 Icebox will be full bolt on with the stock box and will come with the K &N replacement filter.

Ok great, I know it's way too early to tell since you are still in the production stage to get a price, but will it be cheaper than what the Comptech Icebox was?

That "icebox" looks really sweet. Especially since it retains the stock air box. Waiting for a price, am definitely interested.
