Jet Hot Coating

Has anyone gotten their headers coated by Jet Hot? If so was it worth it?

I have Jethot's Sterling silver on my Comptech header, stainless steel will rust if left unprotected due to exposure to high temperature. Exhaust gas also exits faster at higher temperature, yield slightly better flow.

I see you live in So Cal, I live in Vegas. Did you have to send your headers in or is there a shop in California. I have comptech headers as well. Did you feel a diference in response.

everybody i've talked too on this forum and other import car forums have reinforced that it's really not going to get us any gains for our particular engines. it's more geared towards headers on big block v8s that run at much much higher temperatures. it's doubtful you would be able to measure any efficiency increase, although i won't say it's impossible.

of course that doesn't mean you shouldn't get it done for environmental protection, although TunedTL, i don't think you need to worry about SS rotting very quickly. it will happen over time but it should take significantly longer than the regular metal the stock exhaust pipes are made from.

Well I do believe there are some heat reducing properties in the coating so...

cooler engine bay = cooler engine = slightly better performance

well this is empirically true, but i highly doubt we will see any measurable difference on our cars. my friend's 85 mustang has headers that can get up around 1000 degreesF, that's really where you would see the benefits of heat shielding and coatings like jethot.

it would be interesting for someone to try though. get some flow readings and dynos.

jjkilgallon,

Yes, I fedex my header to Jethot west coast address. I believe it is in Arizona.

SSTS,
I am sure SS will hold up better than cast steel, but Comptech header is known for discoloring after a few thousand miles. Take a look at a picture I stole from a black market sale of an used Comptech.

Here you see the mounting plate to the engine is already begin to rust, the pipes are discolored due to heat stress. With Jethot coating, you maintain the original sterling silver or black.
Not that it is important for everyone, but some may want better look considering spending >$1000. They want to pop the hook and not have a rusty, discolored look.
It is also not cost effective to run a dyno for a $120 coating. Like NSXNXT said, it reduces heat in the engine bay because exhaust gas radiates heat. This quote from BMW forum, understand M3 has a different engine but it is still V6. Gas can be as hot as 1000 degrees F

Did you know that our engines have temperatures in this range (F)?:

Upper Cylinder Wall 300-500
Exhaust Valve 1200-1500
Piston Crown 700-800
Hydraulic Valve Lifter 250-300
Crankcase 200-300
Top Piston Ring 300-650
Exhaust Gases 500-1000
Combustion Chamber 3000-5000
Coolant Jacket 165-230
Connecting Rod Bearings 200-375
Main Bearings 200-350
I already mentioned the 3rd benefit, of keeping exhaust gas hot, as hotter gas exist faster, which equal to lower backpressure.
Afterall, it depends on what you want, would coating give you what the gain of UR pulley, no. But am I satisfied with the result, yes.

increase in temperature will results in increase in velocity... i think. this is one of the more understated benefits to doing these coatings. i am going to try coating my whole exhaust, i'd like to see what happens.

Jethot coats inside and outside the exhaust pipe/header. However, I am not sure they can coat resonator and mufflers. I believe after the cat the temperature drops significantly, performance and rust preventing benefits may not justify additional cost. But just like any mod, it is a personal choice.

actually jethot is starting to promote benefits of coating the cat. it's not one of their bigger advertisements, but in their informational material they do bring it up. many aftermarket exhausts (catbacks) come coated as well. for higher HP motors, i can see a benefit. and for low HP motors, i guess it comes down to personal choice.

Could you post on the detail of coating the cat. I am interested to find out how they get around to coat the inside of the catalytic convertor as they are filled with honeycombs.

i got this information from an enclosed pamphlet jet-hot sent to me directly:

"Headers aren't the only parts that benefit from Jet-Hot coating; it can also be used on exhaust pipes, mufflers, and even (for emissions-reducing quicker light-off times) the catalytic converter. By applying Jet-Hot only to the top and bottom intake manifold surfaces, as well as the other outer surfaces of turbocharger ducting, centrifugal supercharger ducting, and fuel-injection system air-intake tracts, you can keep incoming air and fuel cooler by insulating the charge from radiatn engine-compartment head."

i plan to send my cat and intake manifolds sometime this year.
