Question J32a3 head swap for a J32a1

Basically I'm posting to see if anyone knows if the 04+TL head will fit on the second gen TL. Is it a direct swap? Will it not work at all? I might be buying some parts, heads and fuel rail and what not and need to know if it would be worth it or not. Appreciate any info or help with the matter. Thanks.

If I remember, the 3rd gen heads use integrated cast-in exhaust manifolds, so you will probably need to get parts of the exhaust too. This can become a pricey swap, even if the heads fit.

there are all the parts i need in the black market going for very cheap. I just figured maybe I would see some gains? Wanted to do a Type-s swap, but this opportunity presented itself nd I figured I'd ask some of you what you thought.

I say dont even think about it.

If you had an LS1 Vette and you were going to gain 50hp from a head swap - that would be a different story.

Nah nah nah... U use the 3.5 block on the 3.2 Type-S head... and thats how u would get the niggest gain... Its like makin makin a B20 Vtec... 2.0L block with a 1.8L head...

Well the type s claims 260hp
The j32a1 claims 225
From what I've found the only diference is more agressive dual over head cams and exhaust
I'm considering this swap myself but I want to use the 2003 tl-s heads from a j32a2
The only thing I see being a problem is converting a sohe to a Dohc I want to find out if it bolts directly if it does the power gain would be worth it

^ There isn't such thing as a DOHC "J Series".
J32A2 is still SOHC.

The J32A2 extra output comes from the Dual Stage Manifold + Bigger TB, Bigger Exhaust, Higher Redline and a more Aggressive Cam Profile.

Pretty much: Get J32A2 Heads, Manifold, Exhaust, ECU and swap it over a J32A1 to get the extra oomp! BUT by that time getting the whole freakin engine would be cheaper, HECK even getting a J35A3 would be cheaper... Either makes bigger gains than the J32A1 so its a win-win.

The lower manifold/runners are larger on the type s also.

I would just get a J35A3, and stick in at minimum some J32A2 cams or get the 06-07 type-s cams. You can also use cams from the J37 but you need to make some shims

J35A3 all the way!!!! Finally got mine in and love it, only have a few short drives in but I'm loving the torque! Used j32A2 cams and springs, I did PnP the heads, lower runners and IM plus had the head mill .020 which made up the half a point of compression lost by the 35's flat top pistons. Also deleted the air assist, and the flap valve plus put on a set of XS power headers. I had the heads done but did all other work my self with the help of by brother I have about $1K in my J35A3 swap. Its worth every penny, followed by suspension this has been the best thing I've done to the TL. Its also a good time for a lite weight pulley since your going to have it off any ways when you put your new timing set on it.

J35A3 heads are identical to the J32A2 heads and dont have the manifolds cast into them. Headers can still be bolted to them. Hence why we say to buy the J35A3 motor and swap cams from a type-s to make it breath better.

I have a J35A3 with stock intake/headers/2.5" exhaust in my CLS6 & it's a beast. The motor def benefits from the 6 6spd but I'm sure it'll still dance hooked up to an auto..

It really moves but I've got to get my 74mm TB on it and probably a 4" CAI its starving for air. I've got a complete 6speed swap sitting hear just haven't figured out how to drive it yet.

Thought you had a 3.7 IM with a custom adapter to a 76MM TB?

Milwaukee Dave where did you put the IAT sensor? Think I'm going to put it in the intake pipe. Nice adapter by the way! Did you have it machined?
