Headlights: Blacking out housing

Hey guys.

I've been lurking on this forum for a while now and have learned a lot of things as I came on here knowing literally nothing. Without Acurazine, my whip would not even be considered in modding.

Anyways, I am wanting to black out my headlights inspired by 03tLsNBP & xtremex626's TLs. Unfortunately, I am clueless in what to do. I have searched countless times into finding an answer although nothing came up.

So my question is, what equipment will I need (what kind of paint) and where exactly do I paint the headlights? I have already cleared my headlights so one step is done.

I love how the turn signal is so blacked out, and that's where I am most confused about what to do.

Any help would be appreciated,
Thanks!!

Just get some black paint (gloss or flat) and paint the interior headlight surround (the chrome trim piece) No specific paint is needed. It would be best to scuff up the piece with some light sand paper to help the adhesion

Hey thanks for the reply!

The outsides of my headlight is already blacked out. The part that I am confused about is what to paint exactly where the amber reflectors/turn signal area is.

Sorry if I sound stupid, but I am really new at this stuff, and am very afraid to mess up.
Thanks again

oh hey

I just used a regular orange turn signal bulb and orange parking light (194 I believe) from pep boys. I know xtremex626 used a chrome bulb from Sylvania.

i used led switchbacks for my blinker/parking lights and i really like how they turned out. Only problem was the hyper blink which i wasn't able to fix but i got used to it.

bumpity bump. i just came across this thread. all you would need to do for your headlights is to black out the corner lights. (signal light area and parking light area underneath). or is that area already blacked out? seems like you have the a-spec, so it should already be blacked out already.

if that's so, then all you would really need to do is to pry open the headlights, pop the orange diffuser off for the parking light and replace that bulb with a 168/194 amber LED bulb (or any color you desire). as for the turn signal bulb, your goal is to not have any amber reflecting off the chrome, so you can either get chrome bulbs (which i bought off ebay, they're cheap but they aren't as bright as i wanted) or you can get LED amber bulbs (which is what i got). very bright but you'll have to deal with the hyperblink unless you get resistors installed on them.

here's how they look like with LED's:

Yes my headlights are A-Spec. I am only needing to paint the turn signal part of the headlights.

Having a bit of trouble finding paint that matches the A-Spec black though.

Xtremex626:

How was the brightness for the chrome bulbs in comparison to the stock ones?

Thanks for all the replies guys! I would have had this done a while ago, but summer has been keeping me busy haha

the chrome bulbs are noticeably less brighter than the stock bulbs. with the blacked out housings, it would make it even harder for you to see the orange since you only have a piece of reflection from the chrome in that area. i suggest you go with the LED route, it hides the ugly amber and it's bright! the only downside is the hyperflash, but again that's fixable with resistors.

brightness of LEDs:

more pics to INSPIRE you :o

If you already have A-Spec headlights consider yourself lucky and leave them alone. Your car already has a number of excellent aesthetic mods that many here would love to have.

Wow i was planning to do this soon and I think that xtreme626 has a good set up. LED's and some great shots too. And what do you mean using resistors to fix the hyper blink? I amd good mechanically but electrics befuddle me completely for some reason

But I was thinking that maybe I would leave the ring around the Hi-Beam lights still chrome because It looks juuuusst a tad bit too much IMHO

because when you put LEDs on your car, they run at a lower voltage than the stock bulbs do, so what happens is when you do use the turn signal, it will blink really fast. in order to correct this, you will have to install resistors on both sides to stop it from blinking quick.

you can leave the high beam ring chrome but it's alot of work to tape around the surroundings, i like how my turned out. the high beam is still bright as hell whenever it was on .

don't forget the silver strip on the edge of the headlight lens

masking out what you don't want to paint pays off at the end.. you get to have headlights the way you want them to be.. I had switchbacks but I hated the dual filaments so I did the parking light delete and also took out the small 194 bulb on the bottom..

and so... picture whoring begins

with the parking light deletes.. only your low beams and fog lights..

and then you play around a bit more...

cheers~

happy modding.
