Best Performance Mods

Hey Guys!

I've been lurking since November and finally decided I needed to break down and register. There's some great information here and I have already definitely benefitted from the advice/info I've seen. I've got a 2003 TL and think is probably the best built car I have ever owned. Nice machine, no doubt about it. Anyway, I want to squeeze a little more power out of her, but I want to do it just right.

I'm used to American cars, so in this arena, I'm a little bit out of my depth. I've seen people drop money on mods and wind up either detuning the power out of them because they didn't know what they were doing, or they will add a bolt on that has dubious results at best.

I'd love to know which mods you guys think are the best to have that will get the most ponies out of a standard TL. Which are the best, which are the worst? Unfortunately for me, my car isn't a type S, but I'd love to at least get into that horsepower ball park.

Thanks in advance for any help!

To get to typeS power range get intake, headers, pulley, and that should do it.

Intake - I'd go Comptech Icebox, although AEM is good, but louder, both about same hp gains

Headers - Comptech if you have $1000. DC Sports just came out with headers $350

Pulley - Crank Pulley from Unorthodox Racing $225 (including belts)

I/H/P and you'll be as fast if not faster than a TL-S. Probably a little faster. I/H will put you in the TL-S ballpark.

We love helping out in here, but...I'm going to give you my short list and then some advice...

Best bolt ons for some hp
-Headers (best bang per buck now that we have DC Sports)
-Unorthodox pulley
-Cold Air Intake

Now here is my advice...There is a seach option up top. A lot of these new threads are a rehash of what is already on here. It ends up getting polluted with members flaming newbees that started the threads. I can be frustrating for new people who want to know everything and have genuine questions...there are also those lazy bastards in here that won't do a search. Anyway, I was a newbee just a few months ago and learned my lesson. SEARCH IS YOUR FRIEND DUDE! Just some friendly advice to make your visits here more enjoyable!

BTW...Welcome to the spend more money than you thought you ever would club!

All cars, domestic or foreign pretty much work the same.

Headers yield the most HP. 20-25fwhp. Go either Comptech($1k) or DC Sports($400 or less).

Cold air intakes and the UR crank pulley are the next best. They are around 10fwhp each.

The Thermoblok spacer kit does not add HP but reduces the amount of HP lost by preventing heat soak in the intake manifold. The amount of HP not lost is around 5 fwhp.

Exhaust is for auditory value and aesthetics only. Maybe 1-3fwhp gained.

front wheel.....and I suggest the same modifications for any second generation TL...sans the 2000 switch to the 5 speed and the 2002-2003 TL-S they are all the same mechanically.

Thanks a lot, guys! I really apprecaite it. I think I'll take the mods in the order suggested and measure the gains as I do them.

Thanks again!
