if you plan on hosing down your engine bay.. i dont think thats a good idea.. if any of the electrical wires/plugs get wet you could cause a short.. even if you disconnect the battery you still dont know if any water got to any plugs

dude, just hose the fugger down, preferably with a cold engine, but i wet her down, take my mit i use on the wheels, wipe down the major areas, rinse again and then run the car to let the heat dry the block etc so no rusting, done this to all my cars, bikes, no problems. now, if you freakin flood the engine then you'll have a problem, but when you drive in the rain its the same thing!

get a thing of engine cleaner foam stuff. spray it where necessary.

hose it off when it defoams.

then i think the trick is use some tire shine stuff on it for it to look shiny

the safest way is to wrap all plugs and grounds well. disconnect your battery and cover it with a couple plastic garbage bags then use the foam stuff(can't remember name of it, someone else help here). Wait a while until it kind of disintergrates and then hose it off use a light spray, don't go full blast. Then wipe everything down with a MF towel and blue shop towels(paper towel roll but blue). They soak up grease and oil better than anything IMO. Then use a detail spray if you like on the engine cover. Armor All works fine for engine cover and other plastic pieces to make them shine nice. you get the old armorall residue, but not a big deal. Then take off wrap you used for the plugs and take plastic garbage bag(s) off battery reconnect and enjoy your clean engine bay. Also use some nice wax on the paint and it will really stand out. Now I have to do my car again in the spring. Have fun!

Ive never undid any thing or covered any thing before in my life. Ive just used common sense and not used high pressure near any thing that could get damaged. Get a good engine cleaner like stated above, spray it on let it foam up and rinse off. Some areas may require like rickrousch03 said a mit or scrub brush to aid in cleaning.

Use common sense and every thing will be fine with out taking or covering any thing up

Oh and do it on a cold engine

definitely cold engine. I am very careful so I always wrap up all plugs and disconnect battery, not a big deal I guess. BTW does anyone know the name of that really good foam cleaner? I can't remember it and it's bugging to shit out of me.

I've had success removing the engine and placing it my kid's bathtub. I use Johnson and Johnson gentle body wash to get it clean.

I have cleaned my engine many times and never covered a thing (except my air filter when I had a CAI). Do you think your engine stays dry when you drive in the rain??? not a chance. the best thing is to use a water hose w/o any spray end on it, just regular light hose pressure to rinse everything off and you wont have a problem. I use simple green BTW and it works great.

at my friends detail shop they just spray degreaser all over the engines, scrub it with a brush, then rinse it down, spray a lil shine on there, and your good, no problems with doing it like this, just dont sit there and flood the wires and plugs and youll be fine

only thing i hate about all that "dressing" applied to the engine is that while it may look great initally, dirt is attracted even more and clings to that stuff and you just can't rinse it away.

Since a majority of the egine is plastic covers, I just spray some tire foam on, turn the engine on for a bit, then wipe down. It usually has pretty good results.

very true, that is why I dont like using the stuff on the dash and door panels - seems the dirt always sticks more. but it does look nice!
