Window Recall
Just received a recall notice on my Acura 2002 Type S. It is the well known window problems. I made an appointment for Tuesday. I'll keep you guys updated. Anyone got the recall notice?

Haven't received the recall notice yet my car definitely has the problem. It only happens once in awhile though. It's when you lift the switch to put up the driver's side window and then let go, it continues to go up. I've had the car for almost a month now and it's only happened twice. Otherwise, no other problems...

Just got my recall notice and made an appointment to get the Power Window Control Unit replaced 5/16/01. The service manager said the job would take about an hour. I have not had any problem with it though.

Can someone elaborate more about this window problem? I thought it was meant to automatically go up when you pull it up an extra notch. Just like on most cars, there are two notches when rolling the window down (good for toll bridges), but I personally found it nice to also have 2 notches when rolling the window up too. Is that what the recall is all about? Cuz if thats the case, I'd keep mine the way it is.

Reading the recall notice it sounds like some of the Capacitors in the circuitry for the window up/down were prone to shorting. This usually means the maximum voltage ratings of the caps are a little too low for the intended use. Electric motors are inductive and cause voltage spikes when turned on and off. The caps are constructed of thin pieces of metal foil seperated by a thin insulator. When you apply opposite charges to each of the pieces of foil they are attracted to the opposite charge and pull toward it. If the attraction grows too great it can squeeze through the insulator and touch. This is the short.
If it's an electrolytic cap there is another possibility. But I would guess this is it.

They can also be shorted by mechanical mechanism, such as touching the poles together, but if the problem is widespread, it is likely as previously posted - they were either defective or, as we EE types say, "insufficently derated".
There is a safety issue from a child perspective, so watch out.
1) The auto-down or auto-up feature may operate unexpectedly, and the auto-reverse may be deactvated
2) The auto-down or auto-up may be inoperative
3) The windows may fail to operate in the non-auto mode
4) Some combination of the above may occur.

Just had the driver's power window control replaced. It took a little less than an hour, and they washed the car for me too. With free coffee while I waited, it was a snap. My first experience with Acura service was certainly positive!
Terrific car, the TLS!!!

I just got my window fixed today --> I thought I'd hear rattles and squeaks --> but to my delight -- the door is actually more solid now when I close it, and there are no new rattles or squeaks.
