Post Who uses SportShift??

As cool as it looks, it's pretty useless in my opinion, especially with that computer-controlled 1-2 shift at 2500 RPM. Anyone who regularly uses SS have any pointers?? When i do it it shift real jerkily, and the novelty has worn off already

I definitely use my sportshift, esp. when going into tight turns, going up/downhill...I feel it helps with the braking (downshifting to a lower gear). I know there are people here who use it all the time.

Well TuRb0MiKeY, after driving your new TL in full auto mode for awhile you will get to know the optimal shift points and that is when you will start using the Sportshift more and more. I use the SS on open roads or downshifting, But I will leave the car in full auto when I am stuck in traffic. Having an auto sure beats thumping on a clutch when you get stuck in traffic jams as so many of us do.

I use it 99% of them time. You might want to trade yours in for a 1999, since mine does not upshift automatically

Also, SS allows you to keep it into a certain gear. With the auto, it is usally in one gear higher than I really want on local roads.

I hardly use it at all. I dont really like it. My last 2 cars were stick shift and its not the same. The only time i use it is when im on the expressway and i want to slow down the car without hitting the brakes.

I use ss all the time. It is especially useful when racing from the start (even though i dont race much). For example, when i am on the brakes and rev to 2500 rpms and stomp on the gas in automatic...my starts seem really slow. However when i do the same thing in ss, i can really take off

SportShift sucks azz in my opinion. If it shifted faster then there would be a reward to using it, but the shifts are still sloppy and slow. It's nothing like a stick and a clutch, but still has advantages. I would use it more if there wasn't the bogus 1-2 / 2-1 shift that you cannot control.

I never use it, but then again drive in the city all the time. On a canyon road I would probably use inertia braking and hold gears through turns, but not on Dallas roads.

The satisfaction of matching revs, double-clutching and feeling the power hook up to the road is simply lost when you have no clutch...

It helps me feel like i didn't give up the 5-spd all together. Actually, I did. Besides holding the gears, I miss being able to rev the engine at the light.

Cool

I guess i'm one of those guys that is scared of breaking the tranny, but i've found myself down shitting from 3 to 1 and punching it for a quick kill on some civics and such. Most of the time i dont even have to punch it. The other night, after fast and the furious, i was pulling out and at the light there was a Grand Prix GT, i didnt even want a race because of the elevated number of police in the area. But at the light he gunned it and ripped the tires, i stepped, but not all the way down and once i was at the end of second gear i was passing him. By the time i was doing about 60 i had about 2 to 3 cars on him. I like to use it in those situations it get the sweetest shift point in the rpm range.

I still think that the stick is more FUN!!!

I use it a lot, yeah I stay in full auto if stuck in traffic, but I like to go through the gears myself and use it to down shift and what not.
Don't get me wrong, if there is any truth to the rumour of the 6speed stick for next year you'll have to fight me for first in line but the SS will work for now.

I use it primarily for passing. Just pop it from D5 to SS, drop down a gear or two, blow by whoever you want, and then pop it back into D5. I don't find it very practical to use it full time.

Cool

Very useless, especially if you driven manual before. When I'm racing on the highway, you don't have time to look in which gear you are in. Since you can't tell by the touch, like you do in manual. If my eyes look away from the road for 1/2 second my chances of miscalculating a precision maneuver increases by a lot, so I never used it.

Plus they take all the fun out with SS, because the clutch is the most fun part of the manual, just my opinion.

I rarely use the sport shift. Of course I leave it in auto for normal driving, but for racing and such, I prefer to shift by moving the stick down into the lower gears. I think the low gear especially, when done like that, gives the best take off. And you can still shift when you want. Basically the same as using the SS, but your shifting moving the entire stick up through the gear range. For me it's faster like that.

i drove stick shifts for 12 years before i bought my tl. it's definitely not as good as a real manual transmission, but i think its a good compromise between the two. i use it 99.999% of the times except when i need to eat/drink in the car. i never put it in auto mode because the shifting is just too sluggish.

I use mine most of the time, but I feel that when you have to sprint in a straight line with no turns auto works better. To slow down and in twisty roads I like it. it kind of beats steping on the clutch all the time.
