Wheel Bearing

my wheel bearing is worn (causing a loud humming noise) so i want to see it for myself, so i'm wondering what is involved in looking at it. it's my right rear tire.... do i have to take the rotors and brake calipers off? where/what is the bearing? any help is appreciated. if it's easy, i would like to change this myself. that's why i'm asking.

i had this done earlier, now, the problem came back - the loud humming noise, so i'm assuming its the same part. My mechanic said that the part was warrrentied for 6 months/ 6k mi. its been exactly a year now. so i'll have to replace it again. oh. btw, it would help if there's a picture of a worn and new bearing to contrast the differences.

as for instructions or a DIY i havent had to replace mine yet (177,000 miles and running strong) but the rears you will need to remove (looking at teh little pic) the caliper and rotor. and it looks like the rear parking brake assembly? then there should be a large nut in the center of every thing and once you remove that teh bearings can be pulled out.

as for a pic of a worn one compared to a good one that wouldnt be something that you can really take a pic of

Wow, sounds like a big job. You're gonna need to prepare the Fetzer valve with some 3-in-1 oil and some gauze pads. And you're gonna need about 10 quarts of anti-freeze. Preferably Prestone. No... no...make that Quaker State.

I just got mine done last week - no biggie. It was suppose to cost me about 300$ but the guy forgot to charge me for the bearing which is about 90$. Anyways make sure you get an alignment afterwards.

I'm getting mines replaced under warranty. They discovered my CV Boots are bad and I think 1 wheel bearing was bad when I brought in my TL for tranny replacement.

quick ? on wheel bearing

this is my second time replacing it, the same one too! it's my right rear... my mechanic doesn't know why its getting worn so bad/quick... all the others are fine. so my question is what can cause a bad bearing? ?he said the part was only warrenteed for 6 months/6000mi so he can't get another one for free. so luckily my mechanic will install it for free, but i have to get the part...(where can i get it?)

aside from this... once in a while, going over bumps and stuff, i've been hearing a thump/squeaking noise coming from the rear.. i think it's coming from the right rear. now, remember that it only happens sometimes.. i can dupilcate it only sometimes... maybe a blown shock / bad spring? is there a way i can tell? i mean wouldn't a blown shock make the rear of the car uneven? i've put my fingers in and its the same finger gap.

also, could these two problems be related...? any help is appreciated!!!!

squeaks and rattles can be dealt at your dealership under warranty(FREE! they shouldnt be charging you) they might have a bulletin where it may apply to your vehicle you never know.

wheel bearings going bad once maybe (unlikely to happen), but the second one i dont know, wheel bearings go bad usually happen when you been in an accident where that axles been hit, hit a curb hard or pothole the size of grand canyon, misalignment, drifting, cheap aftermarket part replacement, but if none of these apply then there is absolutely nothing wrong with your bearings, just noise from something around that area.

when wheel bearings go bad it sounds like a loud screeching sound, heavy scratch, or dragging sound if any of these noises apply then it is your bearings it would not make a thump or squeak sound

i would carefully look at all bushings,
and also it can be a blown strut not shocks(shocks are for trucks mainly) take the wheel off and carefully look around the strut and if there is fluid leak or the strut is wet then its blown. springs usually do not cause any problems, and you were mentioning about ride height being even, struts can go but the spring still keeps the height at level, struts all they do is slow down the spring from bouncing up and down,
hope this helps
working at a dealership and receiveing squeaks and rattles alot from customers cars
the best tool to use is steelman chassis ears, do a search on the net for it great investment! find where all your noises are coming from!

well, it rain over here so i cant really check if the struts are wet.... hmm... well, anyways,i just wanna clear what i said up.

those are two different sounds i'm hearing, i know the wheel bearing is def. worn and thats getting replaced..

but then there's a thump/squeaking sound going over SOME bumps..

btw, i am no longer under warrenty or anything - if i bring it in to the dealer and tell them my situation about the bearing, how they are just less than a year old, and a genuine acura part, will they check my car out for free? or do dealerships always check cars for free?

called acura today and told them my situation.. look like the part is warrenteed for 12months/12k mi!!!!

he said that all SPARE parts are warrenteed for 12/12. and if you do it at the dealership Labor will also be covered (but i didnt) my mechanic said he'll do it for free - so looks like i'm getting another wheel bearing for free!.. man.. to close to becomoing broke..phew! saved 80$!
