what will you do when tranny warranty expires?

I've had my 02 TL-S since 01/02. Great car, no major problems, low miles, 45K (we shuffle between 3 cars), I was really planning on keeping it till the tranny warranty was close to running out, which I though was 100K miles. Was in for service the other day, dealer told me the tranny wty will expire next summer '09. Dohh!!!, that sucks, not sure I want to keep the car if I may have to pay a few grand to fix a tranny on an old car. I dont love the 3G tl that much, looks too much like a regular honda, and I wasnt planning on spending too much money on a sedan (like a g35, 328, new tl, etc) as I am slowly saving cash on the side for a vette......

what are you folks planning to do when the tranny warranty runs out???

i doubt converting to 6speed is practical solution for the average guy.
doing it yourself requires lots of time, tools and knowledge. and yeah it's not free.
giving it to a shop is probably very pricy. i would say just drive it. i think the real number of those transmission going bad is much lower then what seems in this forum. and worse case AAMCO is about $2500 ? or maybe Dealership will do it for reduce cost as good faith....

not to mention if you just learned to replace spark plugs ... then yeah i would pass on that idea

doing the swap is no harder than changing springs and shocks.

^^then if its that easy i might go ahead and start saving for the parts. from reading swap threads it seems that the issue is getting wiring harness(s)...correct? i have just over 110,000 miles and im on the 2nd tranny. with the way i drive it couldnt last me too much longer. better scratch the drop for now and go for the tranny. i would LOVE to have a 6 speed in my favorite car i have owned!! I plan on keeping this beiotch till the thing is beyond repair! I LOVE MY TL-S!!!!!!

Mine isnt out for another 47k or June of 2010. Either way by 2010 I'm hoping I will have enough money for a brand new car of my choice. If the tranny is replaced under warranty then I will be very happy, and might consider saving the TL as a second car for however long it's practical to keep it. (most likely a VERY long time) If I'm not doing financially well and the warranty is up soon, and it's never been replaced I will have to sell the car before it breaks. =(

I sold mine way before that happend (sold at 60K miles), switched to an Infiniti .... and I am much, much happier.
Thats too bad tho, because the TL could of been a great car and much more solid then it is.

I have a 2000 TL and have a vibration problem while accelerating. It only happens at random. The tires were recently balanced which improved the situation a little bit. The car is shared with my dad, so he will soon know what is wrong with it after seeing that the balancing did not cure the problem. Is this related to the transmission? Am I still covered under warranty since I have 72K miles even though the car is 8 years old?

If it failed, your warranty is 7yrs 9mos, but there is a ton of info about this on the tranny failure thread.

I also have a 2000 TL and I had it replaced in January. I was over on time but under on miles (75K miles) I took it to Acura of Modesto and they test drove it, determined it was bad, called Acura Corp. (didn't even have to ask) and got it replaced for free! If you think it feels funny, take it to the dealer and have them check it out. I'm pretty sure they'll cover it.

I purchased my used 01 TL in December and started having transmission problems about 2 weeks later. The dealer I bought the car from would not fix it but told me to call Honda/Acura. The car had 116,000 miles on it at the time missing the 100,000 mile warranty extension. I had to bring my car to the Acura dealer in Middleton, WI, 94 miles away from where I live, but I only had to pay 25% of the bill, ended up being $1200. Better than paying 100%!

Yes, for you, wiz; not for us. disconnecting all hoses, lift out the engine, woot, it is over me. springs and shocks are too easy for me, but not swapping.

Zimbrick is a VERY good dealer to deal with (they got mine covered for free at 115k, back before the problem was as wide spread as it is now)

Dont let the name of the part be intimidating. Its not any harder than what i listed. Most every thing has a place and only goes one way. The motor is nothing more than a bunch of small parts put together, same with the engine. There is nothing special about either one of them that make them complicated to remove. If you have hand tools any one could. Have a digital camera and take a pic of every thing you remove and # it on a piece of paper. It will help show you where it came from and where it goes. Ziplock bags with a piece of paper in it telling what part it goes to also makes things very easy to put back. Dont let the word trans or motor or any other part scare you from doing any thing.

thats seems very nice , and not the first time i heard that.
if that is the case , and they do that pretty often , then i may keep the car for very long time. $1200 is really nothing considering some maintenance work cost like that..

Thanks for the info. I will have my dad take it in this week. Modesto is also the closest acura dealership to me.

Try speaking with the Service Manager but he'll most likely refer you to Mel Martinez. He's the Tech who took care of me. Just tell him you have a friend here in Modesto that took his car there in January and got it taken care of and that I referred you to him.
