is it when u hear that very roaring sound ? because i have no clue.. i thought VTEC was always there.. working.. while during low and high rpms to save fuel and provide power.... fill me in guys... thanks...

ya i read and it says 5200 is when we hit vtec.. now...

most of the type i slam the gas.... it goes up to like 5K+ ... then shifts... and eventually drops down...

is there any way to keep it at 5K so its always in vtec while driving? .. especaily for instant power?...

i was going at about 120KM and dropped it down to 2nd.... thats the highest i've gone in 2nd.... i was going at 150KM in 3rd gear.. all of this by the way is in sports shift mode...

so am i taking advantage of vtec or was i killin my gears gonig at these speeds in such low gears?

GEAR 4 SUCKS ASS by the way.

Vtec kinda pops (not an explosion) if you've ever had an exhaust on a vtec car or on this one you will know wat im talking about....also it wouldnt be a great idea to keep your car at 5k all the time since cracking vtec wastes alot more gas....hope that helps

VARIABLE VALVE TIMING AND LIFT ELECTRONIC CONTROL (VTEC)
First unveiled on the Acura NSX supercar, the innovative Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control (VTEC) system is a key player in the TL engine's remarkable combination of high-power and impressive fuel efficiency.

Unlike engines with conventional fixed-timing intake valves, the TL's VTEC engines automatically optimize themselves according to engine speed. By altering the lift and opening duration of the intake valves depending on engine rpm, VTEC helps the engine produce abundant low- and mid-range torque with no sacrifice in high-rpm power. Indeed, at high rpm the VTEC V-6 produces considerably more horsepower than other engines of its size.

At low rpm, the VTEC intake valves follow a set of low-lift, short-duration cam lobes with timing that optimizes cylinder filling. In addition, the timing of the intake valves is staggered and their lift asymmetric -- creating a swirl effect within the combustion chambers at lower RPM. The result is increased burn speed with improved combustion stability and an increase in allowable EGR rate. As the engine spins through 4400 rpm (4800 rpm on the Type-S), the intake rocker arms transition to actuation by high-lift, long-duration cam lobes designed to optimize high-rpm output.

On the Type-S, high-performance camshafts further increase power output by providing longer intake-valve duration, more valve overlap, and additional lift for the exhaust valves.

For starters with it floored it shouldnt shift at 5k.

Want to know when you hit VTEC. Take out your intake resonator. You will hear when it does

You can hear it activate at the 3-4 second mark, and it stays in VTEC through the gears until I let off.

Hmmmmm...mine is a much more pronounced loudness when it makes the change. Only mod I did was removing the intake resonator.

4700 rpm is the spec for my 01TL for vtec kick in

Its so obvious you would have to have the stereo cranked not to notice the engine tone change and resultant push back into the seat

That and the quickly falling fuel guage

well to keep it simple, it allows the car to preserve fuel economy at lower rpms and provide high end power at higher rpms....

like having a 2-1 engine..... UNLIKE THOSE NASTY AMERICAN CARS haha

Just so you know, we have SOHC VTEC (Single over head cam).. economy VTEC pretty much.

While the performance VTEC is DOHC (Dual over head cam).

To me the engagement seems somewhat subtle. Then again I have a stock TL-S. Wait until you get in an ITR or a car with a Type-R motor.... VTEC engagement isn't just noticeable, its blatantly so. You WILL be pushed back into your seat.

I get pushed back and its not so subtle in my TL (having a manual probably has something to do with that) My Civic SI was more of a dr jeckyl and hyde but i like the TLs transformation more
