What kind of Snow Tires are you using?
I will be moving to Rochester, NY soon. For those of you who dont know what this means, it is the snowiest city (with metro area 500,000+ ) in the US.. so, naturally I am looking for some snow tires.. I was checking the "tiretrack" website and I couldn't find ANY tires fitting the original 215/50R17.. I tries 215/55R17, 215/60R17, but nothing came out.. What brand have you guys used and how do you rate the tire.. I hear that Blizzak is a good one.. Any comments?
I got 4 205/55/R16 MICHELIN ARCCTIC ALPHIN WINTER TIRES last season. This is a pretty tame area I live in but can get messy at times. I had them mounted on stock wheels that came with the car & I got the optional wheels. I plan to keep the car for another 3 yrs so in that time we will get something bad. Last season here was a sleeper all season tires could handle it but I had changed over all ready. I got them because I had put the car on the road & did see some big ice patches in travel. This is what my tires are suited for. They give a good ride but put out a whine noise in the rain. You need some better meat up in the area that you are going. Try tirerack.com fort winter tires.

I live in Syracuse, N.Y. and believe me we put Rochester to shame when it comes to snowfall. We hit almost 200 inches this year!! Needless to say both my vehicles have always worn snow tires in the Winter. It's the best insurance you can apply for the Winter. Not only can you get better start-up traction in ice and snow but more importantly you can STOP so much better. I have been using Blizzaks for the past 4 or 5 seasons because they have been rated #1 since they came out and they are excellent. They posess a "multi cell" compound which has Winter type traction capabilities on the outer layer and then a typical all-season type compound underneath. The theory being that once you have worn thru the outer layer for Winter (typically about 3 seasons for me, but this will vary depending on how many miles you drive in Winter and how much of it is on dry roads) you then can use them as Summer tires until you run the tread down to the wear bars. This is what I have done in the past but I don't think I will be doing this with my Type S. I just can't see looking at "snow tires" in the off season once I have worn thru the outer tread compound, not to mention the fact that the performance capabilities will be considerably less than even the stock tires. So this year I will be shopping for whatever is the best "single compound" snow tire. Given the stock tire and rim size I'm sure it will be expensive and according to the owner's manual going to a different size will screw up the VSA. The best place I've found for $ and info. is the TireRack but it's too early to think of snow just yet.

For winter driving here in CT, I used to use a Jeep Grand Cherokee :-) Aside from everything I gre to hate about the Jeep - it was simply amazing in heavy rain or deep wet snow - you could drive 70mph in a blinding snowstorm and the thing would track better than it did on dry pavement! (Not that anyone should be driving this fast in a snowstorm!)
Now that I have the TLS, I'm likely to get a set of Blizzaks, I've read nothing but great things about them.

While we're at it, how do you keep your cars from gathering hunks of road salt in the winter?
I got Pirelli 210 Wintersport. They do work extremely well. I was able to zip up a hill angeled roughly about 45 degress that was about 400m long. There was absolutely no slip on the fresh patch of snowfall. It has worked well on ice too. However, there is alot of noise associated with the tires and they do cost ALOT! Get them only if you have extra money to spend...or unless u can get them at a good deal.
