What exactly is a "tranny problem"? and could I be experiencing it?

I hear all these tranny problems with the TL but I really don't know what it is exactly. Can someone pleae explain?

I have had problems with the 02 TL from day 1. There are times when the engine feels really powerful but then there are other times when pressing the gas pedal and the actual performance hits a major lag. I could step hard enough on the pedal for the engine to reach 5000 RPM but the car doesn't always respond, or it would take it around 1-2 seconds before it does respond.
For some reason the car still doesn't really shift too well when in D5 or D4. What I mean is that you, as the driver or passenger can really feel the car jolt when it's shifting (kind of feels like a manual). It's almost like the transmission doesn't know which gear to shift to and has to take a second or two to think about it. Is that normal?

Thanks

same boat as you

Everything you said is what I'm experiencing. I've been waiting for someone on these boards to mention the same circumstances. The worst part of it is that before my TL-S came in, the dealer let me borrow a CL-S for a week. That car was night and day different from what I'm experiencing now. I never drove a car with that much power and response.

I waited the 600 mile break in to really push the car, and ever since I'm been dissapointed. The car is really quick of the line, but in every other gear I've had the same issues you mention. If I jump on it at 4000 RPM in second, sometimes it goes no where. I had the dealer check it out, and they said all the codes came back normal, and the car was performing to specs.

I'm almost hoping it's a tranny problem, because it's dissapointing to think this is the performance I'll have to live with for the life of my lease. Everything else about the car has been sweet(except the horrible Bose system). Hopefully others on these boards can clarify if we're experiencing tranny problems, or a lemon engine.

I'll put it simple for all those ppls who think you have trammy problems. It' basically either shifts really hard than later break down. YOU WILL KNOW IF YOUR TRANNY IS GOING OUT. Don't worry about small things. If you think your having problems pop that sh!t in SS and ride it like mad it will break down Trust me

Mr T. is correct.

You will KNOW if you have "the tranny problem". It is not just a wierd feeling or a loss of power. When you start to get the symptoms (tranny stays in one gear, does not shift right), you will feel it in your gut. "Oh-Oh, tranny problem".

Hopefully, you will not experience this.
