I just programmed mine the other day. Note that not all garage door opener are homelink compatible. Try this steps:
1. While pointing your garage remote to the homelink led, press and hold your garage remote and one of the buttons in the homelink
2. Hold on until you see the led in the homelink blink slowly (takes about 5-10 sec)
3. When you see the led blink fast, release both buttons and try it.
Hope it works and good luck.

home link like the others have stated for opening garage doors, also if you have any homelink automation you can set it to unlock doors and turn on lights. my neighbor has his caddys programed to unlock his front door

Just as a note that may make things easier for you....
If you are programing your Homelink system with a garage door opener that has a rolling security code (meaning that there is an algorithm that determines the signal to be broadcast by the homelink system) you can not use the remotes to program the in car (homelink system). typically there is a button on the garage door opener itself that broadcast the programming signal.
I programmed mine recently and have a rolling security code on my garage door opener. I will assume you do not have your cars manual handy and will tell you the steps from mine.
Training the homelink system.
1. This step erases all previously programmed codes. do this first before first programming. Press and hold the outside 2 buttons until the red light in the transmitter flashes (approxiamately 20 seconds). release the buttons.
2. hold the end of the garage door opener remote control 1 to 3 inches from the homelink transmitter. make sure you are not blocking your view of the red light in the transmitter.
3. select the button you wish to train.
4. press the button on the remote control and the button on the transmitter at the same time. hold both buttons down.
5. the red led light will flash slowly at first and then start to flash rapidly.
6. when the led flashes rapidly release both buttons. the transmitter should have learned the code from the remote control.
7. test the transmitter by pushing the button. it should operate the garage door opener/lights/whatever you have programmed it for.
8. repeat steps for the other 2 buttons.
Retraining a button.
1. press and hold the button you wish to train until the red light flashes slowly (about 20 seconds)
2. while continuing to hold the transmitter button, place the remote control for the device you wish to operate near the transmitter.
3. press and hold the button on the remote control. hold both buttons until the red light begins to flash rapidly.
4. release both buttons. the transmitter should be trained.
Programming with a rolling security code.
1. make sure you have completed the "training the homelink system" steps.
2. find the training button on your garage door opener motor/control unit. the manufacturers documentation should point out where to find this.
3. press the training button on the motor/control unit until the training light next to the button comes on, then release it.
4. press and release the desired button on the homelink transmitter.
5. press and release the homelink transmitter button again. this should turn off the training light on the motor/control unit. (some units may require you to press and release the button three times)
6. press the transmitter button again. the garage door should operate.
Erasing the codes.
1. press and hold the two outside buttons until the led starts to flash (about 20 seconds) then release the buttons. you should do this before selling the car.
I believe I did the steps for retraining a button for my rolling security code garage door and just substituted the training button on the motor/control unit for the garage door opener but you now have all of the information and should have plenty of ammo to figure out how to get yours to work.
Good Luck.
