Warped Rotors Question

So I was at the dealership today getting an oil change ($37.XX now!!!! i need to start doing this myself) and I asked the service guy his opinion about my warped rotors. He says because of the vibration, over time i will break ALL my engine mounts! He says he had a client who chose not to resurface his rotors til the next time he would come in and ended up breaking all of them before the next time and it cost him over $1100!

Is he BSing or is this true? and he said to resurface my rotors they charge about 250. Then shouldn't I just get some new aftermarket ones for that price???

Should I just replace them? The last time they checked my brake pads (@40,000 miles) they said i had about 70% brake pad life left (original too!) and they said to not change my rotors til i changed my brake pads. What do you guys think?

For $250 you could get new aftermarket rotors and pads, if you wanted to DIY. I may be wrong but breaking the motor mounts? Sounds like BS to me.

Changing rotos & pads at the same time is generally recommended.

Yeah thats what I thought.

Yeah Im definitely looking into aftermarket rotors and pads (which this service guy didnt recommend, which i figured since he works for acura hehe). Ive been reading a lot of threads on rotors and pads but cant decide on what i want(too many to choose from!!!)

so how hard is the DIY? I have no experience with this stuff. how much would it cost for a shop to install?

TO resurface your rotors it should cost $20 and you'll just need to do your two front ones. The rear ones are almost never warped.

$20 - TWENTY! I was not missing a 0

Make sure that you always use a torque wrench when installing your tires. Never, ever use or allow someone to use an air gun to install your tires. Over tightening the lugs is the number one reason for warped rotors. It should only cost 20.00 or so to have your rotors turned, but the removal and installation is where the cost is. The 300.00 doesn't sound too far off if they did all the labor. Its high but not crazy.

ROTORA, Power Slot, Brembo are all good rotors. You can't go wrong with any of them. I personally recommend ROTORA. I ran them on my own vehicle and I sell them to all my customers, especiallly the guys here on AZ.

PM me with your year and model and zip code and what exactly you want if you are interested.

When I had the dealer (Valleystream) resurface the rotors, they only removed the wheel and then cut the rotor on the car. They attached something to the caliper and then put the car into drive and let it run.

My mechanic charges $155, i would never let the dealer do it. They rip you off all the time with their prices.

all dealers rip you off thats how they make money, I work at one thats how I kno rotors on our cars are so damn easy....try taking a rotor out of a car that has hubs its a pain in the bootay...I've been doing all my oil changes myself since my first car for the price they charge you to put crappy regular 5w20 you can go out and buy some synthetic for about 4-5 bux a quart which comes out to about $35 bux with filter and a bottle of fuel injection cleaner. If you can take out your own rotors take it to a shop and have em resurface them take em back and throw them back on your car you'll save a ton just depends if you got the time and some tools to do so. Just depends how many times the rotor has been resurfaced before, the more u resurface the thinner the rotor the quicker it gets warped again

it depends on the shape of the rotors. if they are smooth with out groves you may be able to, but if you are putting on new rotors you might as well go ahead and get new pads (thats what i would do)

my rotors are in pretty bad shape. its getting to the point where the vibrating is unbearable when i brake. if i replace both it'll just seem like a waste of my brake pads.

its not using an air gun tht warpes rotors, its when u use an airgun on the lugs w/o tighntin them to at least finger tightness first

[FONT=Arial][SIZE=7][COLOR=Navy] I just had my rotors resurfaced today by my dealer in Sherbrooke, QC and it cost me $100 for all 4 wheels. At least some things are cheaper in Canada. A base 2006 TL costs about $45000 here.

Maybe if you can find a machine shop in your area they might do it for a little cheaper than your dealer
