Wait this is confusing: 2003 TL Key transponder?
Hi
Recently bought a used 2003 3.2TL/Stype. It does NOT have a chip transponder. I had a key cut at the hardware store that works perfectly on the car.
However I keep reading that this model does have a transponder.

Now, I am confused. Does the 2003 3.2TL have a key-transponder or not?
Thanks!

Well, my 2002 TL-S certainly has a transponder key. How much did the store charge you to cut the key? Some stores can program the transponder part also, maybe they did that for you.
Duhh! I feel silly.
I guess when I tried the key without the transponder, I only tried *opening* the doors, never starting the car. I tried it today, and it wouldn't. So there.

He means the Chip inside the Key ("Transponder")... He made a Copy of his Key without the Chip and thus could not start the car...
Funny thing is that it also should make the alarm go off.. Wierd that he could disable the Alarm but not turn the Engine, Perhaps he closed the car and opened before the Alarm could set becouse without a Chip the Alarm should also go-off even with the Key Cut.. The Chip also makes the Alarm de-activate.

You know chips dont have that Small frequency range right? There is NOTHING in the Door to read the Chip in our Cars... But that doesnt mean it does not do so from the Ignition Switch too...
Never tried it since I dont have a Copy of my Key without Chip but Im pretty sure Unlocking the Car from the Key Hole also makes the Chip negotiate with the Ignition to Remove the Alarm.. Otherwise if I had any Key I could do the Key Hole trick and Unlock the Car and the Alarm in the Process.. Would be pretty weak Design Flaw.

There is a switch inside each of the two door lock cylinders, to detect the key position. This key position info is fed to the security module to arm or disarm the security system.
As long as the key (chipped or non-chipped) turns the door lock to the unlock position, the switch will send the key_unlock signal to the module to disarm the system.
The chip-reading range of the ignition sensor is very limited. The chipped key has to be right up against the ignition switch in order to be read properly.

I agree, a cut but unprogramed key can open the door locks, and a keyless remote can be programed to open & lock the doors without the transponder key. It's when you go to actually start the car....
