Cost to Replicate Key

I just bought my TL and it only came with 1 key and 1 remote. The person that I bought it from thought he found another key for my car but it was a key for another Acura TL. SUCKS. I went to a locksmith and he used some device to check my key and he said "ohh this key is special" and told me $60. Is it worth it? Is there a cheaper place I can go to? I know the keys have an electronic thing inside to prevent theft which is why they are more expensive. Also can I use the other car remote and reprogram it to work with mine so I only have to buy the key and not another remote as well? Of course I don't NEED a second key but I want to have it for safety reasons because I locked myself out of my BMW once and it was now fun. It also cost me $200 for some locksmith to come unlock it for me. And I locked myself out with the engine running because BMW auto locks for safety so no one falls out of the car during an accident. Stupid system as it locked after I turned on the car and went out to check something.

remote, yes it can be reprogramed to your car, as long as it is the correct fcc ID on the back and such (for a start, does it say number 1 or 2 on the "new remote", then also what does it say on your current remote, they can't but match

then the key, there are like 3 option for you:
1. go striaght to the dealer and get a new key cut, and programed into the car (some will even program for free, or won't with a key purchuse)
2. get current key duplicated, witch will at least allow to get into the car itself, just not start it though (btw a home depot should not have an issued duplicating currect key)
3. ;kinda the ghetto way; again get your current key duplicated , then with how you got that extra key, cut off the head of it, and tape it to thre freashly cut key

Yeah, I'm just looking for a cheap alternative to get a second key. I don't think #3 will work because that key is for another car so electronic signal that it sends will be different from my car. And for #2, I'm pretty sure my locksmith was going to put that electronic transmitter with the key if they duped it.

well you better get used to key prices, all cars now days have the electronic device in it. Find the correct key on Ebay or some place like that, have a hardware store or some place like that cut the key. Then go to the dealer and have them program it. Shouldnt cost more than 30 or so bucks. Also another thing to do is contact your local dealer and see what they charge just to do the whole thing. the key can be bought new for 15-20 bucks depending on the dealer.

when they program the key to the car, the car itself is program, the programing in the key always stays the same and never changes, so as long as that key would work with your car in the first place (when new) it can be made to work with it now

because our immobilizer uses a different system than the ones with the switchblade. Some have attempted to hack apart our keys and make them work. Use the search button for more info.

$60 at the dealer for just the key? or with the remote? If my locksmith and the dealer costs $60 to make a key I rather go to the dealer. I see that you live in Long Island and I'm at NYC so we can't be that far from each other. Which dealer did you go to?

actually iirc the immobilizer you can get working, but you gotta hack a stock key for our cars though, to toss that immobilizer into the switchblade
more the issue is the remote entry buttons won't work, cause we got a different system, so you still gotta carry around an additional keyfob, so what is really the point anyways (and no you can't just take the keyless entry module from a 3g, and put it in ours; we have seperate outputs for the functions from that module, where the 3g is over a databus)

but it also has to machined for our cars also (like the grooves on the sides), so that also adds cost too, and makes it a little harder

i was also quoted around $100 at the stealership. yeah the parts are cheap, but when you go to the dealer it doesnt matter.

When I bought my TL a few years ago,I only got 1 key, plus a non-functional remote.Changing the battery did no good.I went to the dealership and got a new key made for $50.They wanted $92 for the remote.I ended up getting a pair of replacements online for about $100-$120,don't remember how much exactly.Funny thing:Sometime later when I was running the wiring for my Sirius radio,I removed the cup holder from the console.Underneath was the original valet key.

I'm going to check under my cup holder tomorrow. Not going to get my hopes up but you never know. I guess I'll call around NYC dealers to see how much the cheapest is.

(Costs from acuraautomotiveparts.org)

#23/16 is the fob
72147-S0K-A13 TRANSMITTER ASSY - $65

#6/7 is the key:
35113-SY8-A03 KEY, BLANK - $15

Other costs:
1) labor associated with cutting the key blank
2) labor associated with programming immobilizer to recognize the key
3) labor associated with getting ECU to recognize the fob (or vice versa, not sure which)

So the total cost really depends on what it is you need.

Forgot to add:

If all you need is an extra key that'll open the doors, then you buy the key & get it cut (#1).

If you also want that key to be capable of starting the car, then you get the immobilizer programmed (#2).

And if you want to be able to use another fob, you buy the fob & get it/the-multiplex-unit programmed which is most-likely a DIY procedure if this car is like most.

That is a dealer. Go to their site, Print that page out and have them match the price.

If not buy the key from them for 15 bucks. My local honda (would ave went to the acura dealer but we didnt have one at the time closer than 1.5hrs away) dealer charged me 28 bucks to reprogram the ECU to the key when i did my 6 speed swap. It took them 30 min or less to do it.

I wasnt talking about the FOB, i was talking about the KEY. Fobs can be bought on EBAY cheap and made to work. I have purchased both. My local honda dealer charged me 28 bucks to do it (to both sets) after my 6 speed swap to make every thing work.

i dunno if this is true for other honda dealers but they would not cut my blank key for me, they said they could cut other acura keys but some reason the 99-03 TL they couldn't cut, so i had to get it done at the Acura dealership, which was fine because they did it for free. just heads up

lol, only issue though is how do they cut it for your specific car???, if you gotta go to home depot or something to even have it cut, why not just get a metal key and not have it be breakable

1) You have to go in to the office with the original keys for them to make the CC plastic key

2) It's free

3) It's just an emergency key if you lock yourself out. Something you can easily carry in your wallet and forget it's there 'til you actually need to use it.

That is actually what I'm looking for. A spare key for just in case I lock myself out of my car. So go to Home Depot and give them your key and tell them you need a 27R? If it's that simple I'll do it. And you guys keep saying that you get a free key at Acura made for you. You guys just go in and be like hey can u make another key for me and they say sure. and its free?? If that's the case I rather go to Acura. Thanks guys.

i got mine made around christmas time, the key itself i got off ebay, acura cut it for free. i was using it for a spare "lockout" key, but it actually starts the engine too, which is odd because they didn't program it...

then probably just got extremely lucky, with it having a matching code already (as the old missing key), with like a 1 in 10,000 chance (remember there is only so many key combos; and they are playing on the fact that you won't find a matching car)

You guys down in the States are lucky with those prices. Dealer rape up here is epidemic. I went to the dealer inquiring about the same thing. I was told it would be in the neighbourhood of $400....between the cost of the key, the cost of the fob and programing.
