Cool VTEC ? Define...

From reading threads I am starting to think that VTEC is a mode of operation for the Honda engine, not just the name of an engine. (Cadillac calls their V8's "Northstar".)

Could someone explain what VTEC is? Is it some special boost to the engine?

You can think of VTEC as a cheaper version of Turbo on Honda cars. All TL's have it. It's basically a boost when you enter into a higher RPM range. If you launch it, or get your RPM's within the 4500 RPM range, you will notice more of a growling noise. If you own a TL, what I would do is go slow from a launch, then launch the car by stepping on the gas. I don't recommend you constantly do this, but the first time you hear VTEC, you'll be hooked like I got!!!!

The sound is magnificant, probably the best sounding cars stock...well unless you could the G35 coupe...that exhaust is also soooo sweeeet!!!

So anyways, VTEC is just there for added boost.

later.

It's nice to know he described the sound.....how about what it actually does.

VTEC is Honda's version of variable cam timing. It stands for Variable Time and Electronic lift Control. Basically at a pre-destined point in the power band, the cam will switch and follow over to a more aggressive profile. On the Type-S, there's also a dual stage intake mainfold that comes into play. Anyway, if you saw a dyno graph, you'd notice a power hike at around 4500 RPM. The only draw back is that Honda's VTEC is very peaky as compared to other manufacturers' variable cam timing systems (Nissan, BMW, Lexus, etc). There's a very short over veiw of VTEC, now go drive it like you stole it!

Great explanation of VTEC. Basically you get a second engine profile with the cams working in the "VTEC mode". More juice and less mpg.

Ummm not really, Turbo is a totaly different thing than VTEC... VTEC in simply english language is just allowing you to burn more gas and make it go faster...
Turbo is some other stuff...don't want to get into details of that.

Have you ever heard of anyone say how much psi of VTEC are you running on? I don't think so...

Just want to clear somethings out.

Yeah what VTEC Does is letting you use your gas flow all the way. It's a thing that it'll happen by it self when it's in high RPM.

Yeah... and VVT-I and HEMI are actual functions in a car too and other names, but i can't think of right now.

I really don't suggest you try VTEC, becuz you'll get hooked on it just like me =) damn... i which gas was cheaper...

MY 2 cents

Variable Valve Timing with Electronic Lift Control = VTEC

If you pulled out your cams they actually have two sets of lobes as compared to just one in non-vtec cars. When you hit the designated RPM for VTEC to engage the engine will electronically shift, based on oil pressure, to the secondary, and more agressive, set of lobes giving you more power/ better throttle response.

I have built a few Honda engines, all of which were B-series so I am not sure what the differences are with the new iVTEC in the RSX or HO (High Output) VTEC that we have......

HTH,

Mike

A TL is NOT a race car..and plus, a supercharger is good enough for me. For you boost junkies out there..instead of buying a TL..go buy a STI or Evo.

P.S. Good luck with a Turbo on our POS trannies.

When saying Camry it's assumed it's 4 door. Just like when saying Corolla, you don't assume it's the matrix.

And yes the TRD S/C is avaible, but i don't think the Solara is 4 doors, right?

Plus more people Mod their TL than the Solara.

TL kills :ar15: :ar15: :ar15: !!
