Cool Voila! DIY aluminum trim

Yes, I am not the first one to do this, but I just have to brag. This looks so much better than burlwood on the SSM car. NSXNEXT, thanks for the inspiration.

Yes, it is painted, but of all people who saw it, nobody could tell that it was paint. And yes, I did make the grille insert. That looks quite good too; will post pics tomorrow--need to wash the car first after a dust storm.

It was quite an effort; First, you need to take all the door panels off, cut out the burlwood pieces, sand them with 800 grit sand paper, wipe everything down with alcohol, prime, sand again, paint, and apply the clear coat. I put 3 coats of paint and 2 heavy coats of clear coat. I used Dupli-color engine spray paint, color code DE-1615, which is the closest match to aluminum. And then, put it all back together. Will be happy to answer more questions.

I understand that you clean, sand, and prime, sand, paint, clear. You might as well answered with 'he put paint on it'...no help.

What I was really wondering was what paint did he use, was it just a spray can, did he have access to a sprayer or anything. Also wanted to know if he ran into any problems.

He answered that above.

So my answer was a legitimate response

Honestly you could use any type of paint you wanted (can or spray gun). I have painted trim in body color and have seen it in other colors.

How did what i say add to the thread? I listed the steps involved. I answered in a legitimate responce because there are many that dont know the actual process. Maybe next time you should be a little more clear in your question
Seriously, you need to relax.

You mean the steps involved that he listed in his direct response to my question?

So you really were trying to help by re-stating what we said in his response to me only two hours earlier?

If so, thanks a lot. I think it's pretty clear you weren't trying to help.

As per popular demand, here are a few close-ups, and the grille insert I did a couple of days ago. I still need to trim and adjust it a bit, but you get the idea.

I cut the heads off the plastic rivets that attach the trim piece to the panel. I used a thin box cutter knife, aka razor blade, to do that. The plastic is hard, and it's not easy to do it, but if you are determined, you'll do it no problem. After you cut the top portion off the rivet, you will have to cut some more around the rivet itself, because cutting the top off is only half the job. All of this will make sense to you when you take the door panels off and see what's going on there. In the picture you can see a similar rivet on the left side; to the right are the screws that I used to reattach the piece. Make sure the crews are not too long or they will poke holes in the painted trim pieces. Also, you want to be gentle during this whole process, but I'm sure you knew that.

I bought the grille from Mr Grille. http://mrgrille.com/MrGrille-Acura-TL-Page.html
They have the custom-cut grille for 99-01, but not for 02-03; I cut and bent mine myself. Let me know if you have an 02-03, I will walk you through it.
