not always whenever im bored. mine hits at 4500rpm always. i only wish it was a 6 speed so i could keep it in vtec range...that would be sick. but u can alaways use the tiptronic to keep it about 4500. oh and also vtec kills gas big time, my mileage goes down 15mpg from ~25mpg if i keep doing that!

Vtec has nothing to do with gas mileage If you let vtec engage alot you will use oil You gas mileage goes down because your stomping on the gas pedal

getting on the freeway when traffic is doing 80 in the slow lane~

helps to use it to keep the sliders all clean and lubed
run seafoam thru oil for 30 minute drive before a change too, that cleans those parts as well

Forgive me, my Integra is non V-TEC and I've only had my TL for about 2 weeks now.

Could someone please elaborate on how one would notice the effects of it apart from simply stomping on the gas and not having V-TEC?

depending on the vehicle, the effects will be little to moderate. its not like a shot of nitrous..

the sound of the engine changes upon crossover.. and there is an ever so small thrust (on certain series motors)..

the older model cars with B, H series etc. seemed to have a bit more pop..
the crossover seems to have gotten more smooth over the years with newer cars.

The major surge of power on vtec h & b series motors was due to the fact that vtec x-over happened after the smaller casm was dropping way off in power b4 it switched to the agressive cam. This is why folks like myself bought a vtec controler to lower the vtec x-over point for more mid-range power. For example, the stock h22 motor vtec x-over happened at 5250rpm. Most found that dropping the vtec (per dyno tuning) to 4000rpm yielded more midrange because the cam switches before the low cam has a chance to loose power. When you do this tho, you loos that surge because the power is way more linear in power delivery. Honda learned from this and added this stock. The only car the did not do this was the 06+ Si because these owners like the feel of the boost. However when you add hondata ecu to the SI the gain of 25-30hp in mid-range was due to dropping vtec from the stock 6k to a more effective 4500rpm. Hope that wasn't too deep... .

mine Lude engages around 5k
and my TL was right after 4k

the lude, as you might guess.. hits like a sledgehammer compared to the TL.
not that i ever push it that hard anyways..

actually that's not the case. If i keep it in gear two and cruise at 50mph my rpm is ~5k and i am not flooring just merely touching the throttle to maintain engine speed. Second of all if you are burning oil then your engine must have problems. too much wear and tear or bad gaskets...whatever. I have never burnt noticeable amount of oil and i check it every-time i fill up the tank.

I have never been able to notice the effects either on my TL or the RDX. The toyota VVT-I or whatever engine it is that toyota has on a xrs i used to own, you could feel the car's increasing acceleration when you hit about 6k when the the lift (toyota vtec) occurred. That was one sweet engine.

this is a video i recorded of my TL, you can clearly hear vtec kick in at 4500rpm:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CktTPFSGefg

now here is a toyota corolla xrs, much more noticable in drive and sound specially with headers and intake + exhaust here

hmm seems like the colors should be the other way around though haha.

blue when driving normally, and red when it hits "toyota vtec"

^ unfortunately honda/acura is too conservative with their features to ever come out with something like that. probably because it has no function.
