**!!tribute To The 'v-tec'

Sometimes i wonder if my opinions on 'CAR TALK' is some what one sided due to the fact that all the cars i have owned to date have been powered by V-tec technology but then i stop and try to think if there is maybe a car company out there with a better power plant than acura and honda and realistically there isn't. Pound for pound no one produces a more powerful engine than the V-tec as well as a more versatile and interchangeable powerplant as well. Hands down all V-tec performance cars stand in a class of there own, when the NSX was launched in 1990 it forced the rest of the industry to rethink there preformance platform, as to the introduction of the S2000 back in late1999 it true follows its parent car the S200 as hondas first race car back in the 70's, the S2000 boast a powerplant that is argueable the best i say it can even be compared to minscule level of Indy cars with a 2.2 litre inline four pumping 240 hp of raw power (more power than your average 3.5 litre v6 just shameful). All in all honda/acura we salute for being simply the best and giving the v-tec enthusiast there moneys worth and more.

am i the only one who feel this way? hmmm...

you aren't by a long shot - most believe that HMC's NSX is one of the best sports cars of all time - the designers & engineers obviously had only the idea of 'quickness' in mind when they created it, rather than just cramming ridiculous amounts of horsepower into a chassis, putting extra-sticky tires on it & calling it a 'racer'. The S2000 is a well-followed attempt at the same notion, but for the everyman, rather than those that can afford the likes of an NSX (and probably another car as the NSX makes only a decent daily driver, I would suppose)

that being said, :ibmovetocartalk:

I prefer engines with a bit more torque, but I do love the overall Honda/Acura product

Does Acura / Honda own a patent to vtec? Can any other car company replicate the technology?

They do own a patent, but other manufacturers such as BMW (VANOS) have their own versions of variable valve timing and lift. Fiat was actually the first manufacturer to patent it (VVT).

Each maker has its own patent, and each of them is slightly different in terms of what they do, the design, and implementation.

not entirely true honda's new AVTEC enhances the features of VTEC and i-VTEC by providing a fully variable valve timing and lift control system a system which is currently used by BMW’s Valvetronic, which also removes the need for a throttle butterfly. Every other system as of today has fully variable valve timing, but valve lift is only switchable between two fixed profiles

but iforyou is right on that each system has their own stand out traits, as well as a market patent on every aspect of their various projects

v-tech

My first "Non-German" car, and I enjoy the sound very much. Cold air intake really sets it off.

ahh the sound of my V-tec, funny story i hopped in my cousins galant a couple days ago drove off and started to freak out like whats that noise, then i remembered not all engines are as finely tuned as the V-tec just a slight high whistle with a hint of attitude as the RPM's enbark on that triumphant climb to 7000 revolutions

OMG ... If you take something and then add V-tec it's like a million billion times better!

It's variable valve timing. Get over it already or go to the Temple of Vtec

yeh that inline 6 cylinder from bmw sucks, the tried the biturbo this year on the 335i and for all thats there it still sucks, the G35 and the new G37 got em beat by a longshot, i actually had a run with the 04 model at a red light just disappointing i didn't even use SS, i say unless you pay more than 60000 for a bmw or benz its gonna be garbage
