V-AFC -->effectiveness and settings

Hi all...i'm probably not the onlyone thinking about this mod and now that its summer i wanna do some moddin'... For those who already have a V-AFC, i'd like you to tell what the vafc does, what you got out of it and if possible your settings.

well of course its one of the final performance mods; lets suppose the person has i/h/e a new throttle body and maibe pullies too...i just wanna know if its worth it, and what it actually does.
i dont understand the 8point adjustements every 500rpms, the "+/- 50% at each of the user-defined setting points" and the low/high camshaft settings :banghead:

I was able to get 10whp out of the entire powerband with the mods that I have (see sig). Also if you want to see the dyno results click on my pics. You can also see where and how I mounted the AFC in the pics section.

BTW: each A/F setting will be different for each motor. You must get it properly dyno tuned.

the only way you are going to get any gains out of it is to have it dyno tuned

i think he gets that it needs to be tune but i think what he's trying to say is he doesn't understand what the unit itself really does.

now if i'm right in my assumption about what you're asking then here is a short explanation: it will allow you to alter your air fuel settings at any given RPM point in order to optimize your engine's performance. on top of that you can alter where your vtec engages to bring your power band up or down. altering the air/fuel mixture obviously is critical at this point since your demanding more performance. now *if* i am correct about the +/- 50% adjustment thing at 500 rpms (and that's a big if, but i'm confident on my explanation this time ) what that means basically is every 500rpms, you can adjust the air/fuel specs within + or - 50% of the factory settings. now i guess the VAFC I will only monitor this within every 500RPMs, whereas the VAFC II can do it in 200RPM increments i think.....

someone please stop me if im wrong or fill in the blanks, but i am pretty sure that is the main gist of the VAFC. hope this helps, if not then i'll just shut up.

yes, this is true :smokin:

the question i have though is whether it is worth the cash to buy the VAFC2 or if the VAFC1 is good enough....anyone, anyone?

The biggest thing I noticed with my VAFC is that it smoothed out the power band. No more turbo effect when VTEC kicks in.

Here's where I mounted mine:

I did it myself. Wish I could find the thread where I posted how I did it. I think it's gone.

It took a lot of fabrication. It's an aluminum plate that slides down when the holder is rolled down. The sides are a combination of mdf plywood and epoxy putty. Took me a few tries to get it right. Lot's of sanding to get it shaped the way it is.

I bought the Frog wiring harness. It's plug and play. It wasn't cheap. I think I paid $150 for the harness, but it literally plugs into the ECU. No fuss...no muss

someone gave me this but i probably wont understand untill i get the vafc:
W.O.lvt: 0,-1,-2,-2,-1.
W.O.hvt:4000-3,4400-3,4800-0,5200+2,5800+3,6300+3,6800+3,7500+2

I belive the only differance between afc1 and afc2 is that you can set two different WOT maps. One set for race fuel and the other for regular 92 (or what ever you run). Like NSXNEXT said the best part about the AFC is that is really smooths out the power. Yeah it did give me an extra 10whp but thats not really enough to feel a great difference. Once again etxxz if you use someone settings from another motor, may be too lean for yours and will end up with a sezied motor.

As for mounting in the sunglass holder I took it to a good stereo installer and they used bondo and then painted it to match the existing plastic. It is set deep enough so visibility isn't an issue. NSXNEXT put his on a bracket so you can slide it down (very nice!) but a little extra work.

yeah you may save on gas but you may have to buy a new motor.

The AFC is not bad for the motor unless it is not tuned properly. I was saying if you lean out your a/f ratio too much just to save on some gas (I think Tatewaki was just implying humor) you may kiss your motor good bye. The AFC is fine just as long as it its installed and tuned properly.

As for your other question there is no Apex'i V-AFC sepecific for the TL's motor, they are all the same. I belive there are 8 wires that hooked up the the ECU and the instalation of those wires are diffent for each motor (thats it).

good luck.

No, you can buy the Frog plug and play harness like I did. But expect to add about $200 to price of the VAFC.

If not, yes you will have to tap into several wires on the ECU harness. It's not for the timid.

Exclamation guys, you have to go to

www.apexi-usa.com and gain some knowledge! it is a serious performance mod. satin, bug, neil are all right regarding the unit. it should be dyno-tuned for max effect especially w/ N2O, or I/H/E. or you can just use it to lower the vtec engagement point! my 99 kicks in at 3800 rpm's WOT.YOU WON'T BE SAVING ANY FUEL!!!

lowering the vtec is definately the way to go. sometimes it seems like you're waiting forever for it to kick in.

ebay is probably you're best bet. if you're timid about shopping on ebay then just do a generic price search on the internet and i'm sure you will find some decent prices. good luck!

I got a V-AFC II for 299 shipped on Ebay. It should be here sometime this week.

I'm gonna do what Ken did and install it in the sunglasses holder since I never use it, anyway.
