uhhhh this doesn't look good

so i was driving home from the bank tonight and everything seemed fine, when all of a sudden the engine just starts to unwind, which is followed by an abrupt thud and second gear catching and a big jerk. now the d5 light is flashing, the check engine light is on and the sports shift display is on even though the car isn't in SS. pulled into the nearest parking lot and turned off the car and let it sit for a bit. fired her back up and the SS display was off but everything else was still on. my house was only a mile away so i slowly drove her back, though now she was shifting into third and forth again.

is this what i think it is or is there some hope? cause stupid college is sucking up all my money and i really can't afford a costly tranny repair. btw i forgot to mention it's a 2000 3.2tl with 95,000 miles on it and the 5sp unit. up until today i've had 0 problems with it.

also a side note:
the car has been making a slight whining/whistling sound when it passes 4K rpm for the last week or so now. you can only hear it with the windows down. im starting to worry that maybe something serious was actually wrong.

any help would be greatly appreciated as i am seriously freaking out right now.

salvage title cars= no trans warranty
BUT still covered on seatbelts and SRS airbag warranties~

to the OP- get to the dealer immedialty - you should still be covered or close enough on time limit to get a free warranty transmission
Read the last few pages of Tranny Failure thread for advice on getting Goodwill coverage if needed

DAMN! i just got my transmission replaced for $2100!! only because the dealership or ACURA covered 50% for transmission and labor. they told me that the TLs i think 02 maybe even 2000 had transmission recalls... so you might want to check it out with the dealership. But they will quote you atleast $3000.

all the years except for a part of the 03s are covered. And the average price of the trans is 4500+

thanks guys. I guess I'll take her down to the local dealership on wednesday and see what they say. I really hope that they will do it goodwill as i dont have even close to enough money for a new trans.

quick question- should I try to drive her to the dealer? cause I just limped her home and haven't drove her since. do I just driver her slowly there or get her towed cause i don't want to damage anything else in the process?

You should definitely go have it checked out...if you really feel like the car will get to the dealership without anything happening...then just try driving unless it too far or in traffic. Or just get it towed if you wanna be on the safe side. I hope they cover you all the way! good luck and keep us posted.

Independent rebuild runs 2500-3k parts and labor with 1/12 warranty (usually).

Dealership reman runs around 3500 parts and labor with 3/36 warranty.

$4500 is way too high. I can buy a 5-speed auto through Honda's remanufactured transmission program for $2095 including two-way shipping.

when the car acts up - you can often shut it off 15 -30 minutes, restart and then it will drive home fine and be good for a week- then act up again

If the dealer is close by, drive it around the blovk to check if 2nd-3rd gear are working and proceed to dealer

you cant hurt it more after it gives the signs of death-
I mean just by driving as needed.

Acura installs a different-complete assembled trans, your old one goes to the rebuilder to be stripped for good parts and toss the rest in the garbage

well that was extremely lucky. the extended warranty is 7 years 9 months/109,000 miles and my car was purchased in febuary 2000. that slates my warranty to run out next month. so for now everything looks good. (aside from the fact that im not 21 so i cant get a rental car) I guess my only question now is seeing as my warranty is gona be out in a month, what are the odds of the new transmission failing?

One of the members on here had a 2000 TL with the same mileage. The dealer told him that they could not cover it, but a call to Acura Corporate resolved the problem. Corporate stepped in and covered the repair 100%.

Yeah I just had my trans replaced not too long ago and Acura Care covered quite a lot. Paid $1366 out of my pocket, which was a big break for me since my car isn't covered under the transmission warranty.
