Question Turbo Visions

Can our TLs or TL-s handle a turbo. Since our cars dont come with turbo stock, will putting one in destroy our engines?

A turbo is the best thing you can put in a car to get the most horses out of it considering all the other mods. Ive seen so many honda civics and is300s with turbos installed, and it makes me wonder how long those engines will last, because ive heard that engines that are not made for turbos cant handle a turbo for long. All you techies out there, is this true?

That link was to the Comptech supercharger thread...which is not a turbo, as the topic starter had wanted to know about...
turbos and superchargers, although both boost the engine output, does it in two different ways and have quite different properties

Cycx is right, the link juniorbean gave me didnt really answer my questions but thats ok as long as people keep posting. Im really serious about finding out if installing a turbo in our engines is feasible. If it is, the possibilites are limitless.

So keep posting your thoughts and facts, and lets see if we can get somewhere with this.

Talking

a turbo would be more efficient, but more of a pia to install aftermarket on a v6 than a supercharger would, as opposed to on an inline 4, where an after-market turbo kit would be more straight-forward.

First you would need 2 custom exhaust manifolds going to 2 small turbos, then pipe them to 2 intercoolers and pipe back to the throttle body. (300zx turbo, 3000GT VR4 & Audi S4 are examples of v6 turbos). Pipe sizes & bends, turbo sizes, intercooler sizes and placement, amount of boost the heads can take, detonation prevention all factor into how successful it would be.
A great deal of R&D must go into such a project to avoid disasterous or costly results.

Fine tuning timing, knock, air-fuel ratios and exhaust gas temps, installing larger injectors, colder range spark plugs, upgraded fuel pump, fuel control computer, and keeping tabs on what the ecu is reading would be essential.

A supercharger, on the other hand is almost only a bolt-on proposition. Although I am always skeptical about SC kits w/out an intercooler. I didn't see the specs on the tl SC, but a liquid-cooled intercooler would be ideal for any sc.

Ooops... guess I should read a little more first before posting links!!

Either way, the supercharger part is irrelavant, but the questions about the tranny, etc. would be relavent to the turbo as well, so at least I half helped out.

Personally, I don't think we'll see a turbo for a while... I mean, look how long it took for a supercharger to come out. However, if anyone can get a custom turbo made, Astro would be the one!!

One of the problems with adding a turbo to our engine is that it may be difficult to boost our "high compression" engines. The peeps w/ celica gt-s, a really high compression engine (11:1 or something like that) have been waiting for a while now for turbo's to come out on their cars, but little have progressed. I think things like reinforced pistons or reduced stroke length to reduce the compression, maybe necessary to allow our engines to accept a turbo.

Dude our Trannys cant even handle the power from our stock motors!! Everytime i get in my car i cross my fingers that i will be able to shift thru every gear on my way to work and not end up on the side of the road like my buddy going "vvvvrrooooom" vvvvvrrrooooom"!!! No way am i throwing on some turbos! the only thing i would be speeding up, would be the death of my clutch packs!
