tune ups before the races
Take out your spare, and tools, get rid of unnecessary stuff inside the car. Wash and wax it to keep rubber/track dirt off the paint. Make sure all your fluids are full and clean. Make sure your brakes are good as well.
What type of racing? 1/4, autocross, HPDE?

what kind of car and what do u have done to it?. take out anything that u dont need, all it is dead weight and it will lower your times, if your pushing a lot of power, be sure to use slicks,

there is a bit of delay when you hit up and when the car shifts, i do mine about 500 rpm before redline and it throws up the gear right on cue. every car is different a little bit, take yours out to an on ramp a few times and see what works for you.
but as far as shifting SS and letting it full auto, if you pedal to the metal auto will still shift at redline wouldnt it?

using ss will not damage the car anymore than using it in full auto will. all your doing is sending an electric signal to the transmission to tell it when to shift up, same thing your ECU does
hold the brake, give it gas to about 1800, let go of brake once the u see the green light, and if the tires spin next time drip the rpm by 200 or if they dont spin raise it up by 100 or so.
Gate shift. Put it all the way down to 1 and do what Rajca said above. when at redline shift to 2nd etc....
I ran a 14.9xx as my best time in my 2000 TL, i averaged 15.2 (just intake and mufflers)

Thinhthan, you mentioned that something wasn't working properly with your tranny, inside the "problems & fixes" sub-forum.
I suggest that you DON'T try to race your car until the tranny is fixed. If it is really the 3rd gear clutch pack starting to come apart inside your tranny, the broken pieces will clot up the transmission oil filter, and you may experience a dangerous sudden lockup with your car at highway speed (worse still, during a high speed corner) when the tranny suddenly shifts from 5th gear to 2nd gear.

well i only got thats problem with the reverse and only if i dont push the e brake than put it in nutral than let the brake off and let the car move a lil than put it in park. it doest have any problems down shifting or anything like that
I think his point is that you shouldnt have to do anything to get it to work fine besides put it in reverse. If you are having to do a little trick to get it to do right then something is already wrong man. BE careful with it. On a strip if you have a wreck at those speeds you can hurt yourself and others that are just there to watch very easily.
X2, gate shifting is best for 1/4 use in the TL. The hardest part is to launch it without bogging, or too much tirespin. SS is more for winding roads, on/off ramps.
Here is a very short vid of my gateshift from 1-2. I had to stop because a car pulled out up ahead and I didn't want to have to slam on my brakes.
