Is this True?? Tranny core charge...
I had the transmission rebuilt in my '99TL by a tranny shop here in town and it went out. So I took the TL to a dealership and asked for a price quote to replace the transmission and they told me $3,100 plus $1,200 for a core charge. This is my question, has anyone ever been charge a core charge before??

The tranny core charge should be included in the total price... but the price of the core charge should be refunded (or a large percentage of it) when you give them your old trans core...

the dealership is telling me, since the tranny was rebuilt by some tranny shop and it has aftermarket parts in it. They will charge me a core charge of 1,200 on top of the price quote they gave my to replace the tranny... (that is keeping my 'rebuilt' tranny)

Core charges are refunded when you bring in the old trans. If they say they have to add on 1200 on top of it tell them to get fucked. When they rebuild the trans they replace any parts that would have been put in to begin with.

They should only keep the core charge if the transmission is not rebuildable, e.g. damaged case.

In Acura's opinion: if anyone but their shop has been inside the trans- its not a valid core- straight exchange in their mind
Thats why even the Dealer only uses a boroscope camera to look inside a trans- they are not allowed to physically go into the trans or warranty is voided
So you would have to pay extra for not giving them an untouched acura trans
Who knows what the other shop did, so why should acura believe its not a total waste inside and not a single part they can use?

Here is the whole story; I bought the TL in Nov of '07. The week before I bought the car the transmission was rebuilt by Wasatch Transmission. Now, less then a year later and less then 12,000 miles the transmission went out. I called Wasatch Transmission and told them the transmission went out and I would like the warranty to cover it, but since I had bought the car their warranty was non-transferable. I didn’t want to take the car back to Wasatch Transmission and have the transmission go out again in a less then a year… So I thought I would take it to the Dealership and have them replace the transmission and get the longer warranty on it. I called a dealership up and told them over the phone the transmission was rebuilt less then a year ago. They told me to bring it in and they would take a look. I took the car in and told them the codes I was getting and I thought the transmission could be going out. Later that day the dealership called and said they were getting the same codes I gave them and the transmission needs to be replaced. They quoted me $3,100 to replace the transmission. I told them to go ahead and replace it and I went in later that day and picked up a loaner car (this was on Friday 08/29). Tuesday 09/02 the dealership called and said there was going to be a core charge of $1,200 on top of the $3,100 since the tranny was rebuilt by a transmission shop. That night, I picked up the car from the dealership gave them their 100 bucks for their diagnoses fee and drove the car home. I don’t know what to do now? What would you guys do?

Hey~ all I did was tell you what their viewpoint is- reasonable or not- thats what they say.
Acura paints certain bolt heads blue on the replacement trans, so the techs can tell at a glance if its been replaced with a real acura rebuilt
Whether the tech and the service manager work with you is questionable- the tech can easily tell its been replaced, and if there is silicone or other things not used by acura- they tend to notice that too.
If acura warranty center declines the core- the dealer gets billed for it.
As I have been told- if the dealer so much as opens the trans case- its not good as a core.
So if yours was rebuilt by a shop- its going to be obvious its been opened.
Kris- you did 2 or 3 rebuilds on these- is there is visable indication afterwards? wear on bolt heads...

Sorry, I am new to the TL scene and I have a newbie question (so go easy on me), but my question is; with the transmissions having problems getting the transmission rebuilt by a transmission shop isn’t the best choice. Because the shops only rebuild the tranny and not replace it with a newer tranny with a different design to fit the problem. Is that correct?

those of us in the extended warranty group get the new improved acura unit when the stock trans dies
If you are out of warranty- its trans shop to rebuild yours
There were improvements made to the rebuilt units from acura in 2005
by midyear those seem to be getting installed and overall have a good record- though some do still fail.
There is no permanent fix for the prob

That big scratch XXX thru the trans' serial number plate, and the scrawled initials and date of the rebuilder shop in to the case-that wouldnt be a clue a shop has been in there.......
like how junkyards (auto recyle yards) mark their parts, so they can warranty it if needed
