Well, a slight delay is acceptable. I'm not sure what you exactly mean by "a second".

Does it go into gear with a jerk or a thump? If so, that's not normal.

What year is your car and how many miles do you have on her?

Yeah, that's about normal.

I've had two trannys go on me. But I believe they have finally fixed this problem. Considering, that I've put about 35K to 40K on tranny number three with no worries.

Tranny 1 and 2 went pretty suddenly, there was only like 4 days of symptoms before they failed completely.

Yep, mine does that too. It is normal as long as your not hearing any banging or clunking.

before my tranny change, shifting was definitely delayed, but it seems that after I got my new tranny, the shifts are quicker. Is that right or am i just imagining that?

Yeah, they reduced the clutch disengage/engage time to reduce clutch grind. I believe they also increased oil flow around tranny and reduced friction coefficient of clutch plates...

funny... if you redline the engine and switch gears... you might hear a "chirp", that chirp might be the clutches as opposed to the tires... I think.

I also notice the delay but percieve TWO engagements about 1 second apart.
Especially when switching from reverse to D5. I have come to be cautious
when backing out of a parking spot because if I hit the gas as I feel the first
nudge of an engament the second one will kick in too sharply. It just doesn't
"feel" good on the tranny. Perhaps all I am doing is forstalling the inevitable
transmissioin failire,...who knows.

I HATE the way this transmission behaves. Especially when cold. Very sharp
engagements until warm and then it smooths out considerably. I believe many of
the dealers knew about this quirkiness since every time I went on a test drive
and when picking up the car they made darned sure that the car was hot. After
I purchased the thing and noticed this behavior the service manager said it would
smoothout after a break in period.....Bullshit.

I put 30K on my tranny before it went out, and it went out in only 2 driving sessions! Coming home Sunday night, and trying to go to work Monday morning. Seems like the failure time is completely unpredictable. Unless they positively identify and fix the problem, looks like I'll be selling the car when it hits 100k
