My dads 2003 TL-S was leaking transmission fluid and now the car needs a whole new Tranny. I can't give you the vin # cause the car is that the dealer. Whats up with the TL-S trannys?

Man, I cannot believe trannys on the 2003 are already going. One question though, is it mostly TL-S models, or are the TL-P models equal in numbers. You would expect to see more TL-P models as the TL-S models just came out last year.

I spoke to one of the technicians at my dealership and he said it's primarily due to the material that the 5th gear is made of. It supposidly is made of a softer metal and is shredding in some cases. Once they shred the tranny is polluted and the remaining gears get damaged from the debris. I don't know how valid a stmt this is, but he brought the TL's weak tranny up with an explanation before I even asked so it may hold some validity.

I ran into this thread on a IS 300 forum oddly.
Anyways, I know all your problems all too well. Many other prelude owners have had their SS trannies replaced or over hauled. And some members of our camp have been hounding from some action from Honda for sometime now. I've personally filed some complaints with other members to Consumer Affairs, and no word. I've had three trannies all-together, and am running on a overhauled one now (car is only at 50,000 miles). I'm posting to ask that you visit the URL below and share any information with us.
In brief, any efforts to resolve our issues with Honda have come to a dead end.
You guys may have reported 27 trannies lost, our camp reports too many to count.

There are some posts worth readings, espesically filed complaints and other stories.

So here's my sad story. The other night while I was driving home, my VSA light came on and the check engine light lit up as well. Thinking nothing of it, I just drove home and parked the car.
Then next day, the car started having funny "jumps" in between shifts. In fact, one time the reverse gear didn't even catch.
So I took it in today and they told me that it was a transmission problem (big surprise right?) and that it would take five weeks for them to get the parts in. No big deal. I figured they would give me another TL as a loaner; DEAD WRONG.
What I got was an Enterprise rent-a-coffin Geo Metro. They force you to buy their insurance ($9.00/day) too! Can you believe that? I complained to the dealership and then to Acura Customer Service but all they said was that it was going to a case manager for this region and he would get back to me in 2-3 business days.
I bought my TL-S because my Legend has been so good to me. Now that I see the crappy service and substandard workmanship in the new Acuras, I'm going to get a BMW next time.
2002 TL-S White w/ 20,797 miles
I would tell you the VIN but the dealership has my car at the moment.

Toasted,
When mine dies, they gave me an enterprise POS too, but I pitched a fit about the insurance and made the dealer pay.
There is NO WAY you should pay that.
Call the 800 number and raise hell.....

Where'd you take your car? My tranny just died and I brought it to South Coast Acura in Costa Mesa. They gave me an RSX loaner. And it's only supposed to take a week to fix. Maybe it's not too late for you to take your car somewhere else.

Where I bought my car
I bought the car from South Coast Acura. I am getting it serviced at Cerritos Acura. I talked with the service department at South Coast and he told me that it would take him the same amount of time to fix.
I'm very surprised that they gave you an RSX to drive around. South Coast told me they would handle the situation the same way that Cerritos would.
Am I just unlucky?
However, thanks for the information. Maybe I'll yell at the service department in both dealerships and demand a loaner.

Quick Update
I got a call this morning from Acura Customer Service
They are going to give me another car that is comparable to the TL. The rep also told me he was going to expediate the shipment if at all possible for the transmission.
So things worked out; sort of.
Only thing I don't know is if they are going to replace a defective transmission with another defective transmission. I hope not!
