Are the trans THAT bad?
I was thinking of getting a 99 but I'm kinda scared from all the hate I've heard about the trans. I want the car, but I dont have the money to replace a trans if I have to. Any ideas?

Yeah, go for it ! Look it over !
The '99 TL has less tranny issues, but alot depends on mileage and "PM".
Check the fluid's condition and level, do a good spirited test drive at various speeds and conditions.
