tranny shifts
tranny shifts
i have a 03 tls with only 150 miles on it and from the day i picked up the car (right off the truck with plastic still on it) i can feel the shifts from gear 1-5. The shifts aren't the hard jolts some people are experiencing and the car sometimes holds a little while going uphill (is this for a little more power?) I'm not sure whats going on because I also have a RL and Honda accord. The tranny feels the same in all three cars but i hear people saying they can't even feel the shifts in their cars so i'm a little worried.
Hi there,
When I mentioned that I could "feel" my shifts, I also included that I felt a difference b/w the day I brought it home up until two months ago, and NOW. There is a big difference, in addition to the hard-smacking into gears and what not i also talked about. If I were you, I wouln't worry too much unless you also begin to experience the other symptoms other people are talking about.

Wouldn't worry about it
We have had our 03 TLS for about 2 months now. Being able to actually feel the shifts has always seemed to be somewhat dependent on how fast we let the RPM's rise during acceleration and whether or not we are going up hills. If we drive very conservately on relatively level ground, we generally can't feel the shifts. If we are giving it a little extra gas pedal or going up significant hills then we can generally tell when the shifts occur but they still seem pretty smooth and quick. They are never harsh or take an extended time in between gears to shift which, by most accounts on this board, seems to be the case when tranny problems are beginning.
theory #1 - your tranny learned your driving style and knows that you want to drive hard and feel the shifts
theory #2 - it is on its way to a failure.
When my tranny #1 and tranny #2 were new, I did not feel any shifts, just smooth pulling away.

Of course you're going to feel it shift! I don't believe anyone who tells you that they CAN'T even feel it shift. YES, some shifts are smoother than others depending upon how hard you step on it or how much you back off of it just before the shift, etc. Uphill, downhill.... IT'S NOT MAGIC... IT'S A TRANSMISSION... How can you NOT feel it if you're paying attention. You always feel when you shift a manual transmission. The computer tranny shifting isn't going to be absolutely perfect either.
I'd only be concerned if it clanks or bangs hard between shifts, or revs/slips between shifts. It's NORMAL to be able to feel it. It's NOT normal if it JOLTS or SLIPS between shifts...
As soon as you quit worrying about it, you'll quit feeling them... From what you've described, it's perfectly normal. The shifts are typically nice and smooth, but they ARE detectable...

I think people on this board are making everyone overly paranoid about their transmissions. What you feeling when you go up hills is normal. Our transmissions have "Grade Logic Control" where the transmission holds gears longer when the car senses that your going up/down some gradient. It's normal, and I would not be paranoid.

Hey 2k2, I am with you on the paranoia...It seems like there is more talk about trannies than anything else about our awesome cars.
And Peter, what are you talking about bro..If you have half a brain, when there is something wrong with your tranny, you would KNOW, and you wouldn't need people all over this site talking about it as a warning. I knew the tranny was flawed from the day I drove the car off the lot, I dont need people telling me their particular stories all day to know to watch out for tranny problems.

There are about 20 posts about how "our awesome cars" for every 1 about a tranny failure.. btw, what are we in grade school talking about our micromachines.. seriously.. "our awesome cars???!!"
Enjoy rockin' your mind posting about how awesome a car is online -- you're a better person b/c of it, I'm sure. I'll use these forums to research issues cropping up w/ the TL-S and use them to my advantage. God knows we all don't have your intuition when it comes to detecting a tranny flaw.
BTW .. you see those 700 or so posts to my screenname.. about 680 of those were about "how awesome our cars are" until the tranny started going..
Peace
Grade School?? Micromachines?? Our car IS awesome, and this IS a TL site, so I have every right to make positive statements to a site full of TL owners about our cars. Hey petey, if you had any reading comprehension skills, you would see that all I wrote was that you don't need post after post of tranny failures to promote some paranoia about our vehicles. And YES, my tranny is flawed, as is all the tranny's in TL's on the road, and it is evident from the day you get the car. That doesn't mean I didn't get an awesome car for an unbelievable price, it just means the tranny requires extra attention to avoid problems. Hey petey, some advice for you BRO, try not spending so much time making yourself feel better by using phrases like grade school and micromachines, because you only make yourself sound dumb, but I'm sure you've been getting that your whole life.:p

Oh, a few things about your grammar "skills"...
"And YES, my tranny is flawed, as is all the tranny's in TL's on the road, and it is evident from the day you get the car." How about "as are all the trannys (no apostrophe) in TLs (again, no apostrophe) on the road..." I think your next post will be more grammatically correct, just keep going over your mistakes

Um, who's making themselves sound dumb?
(please don't revert to "I know you are, but what am I!?" for your next post)
No, I'm not going to start a back and forth fight with you..Net rage, did you not see the little smiley icon after what i said. Actually I have been laughing away at how seriously your taking all of this petey. And how cool does it make you feel to be the captain of the grammar patrol..Well congrats, maybe you should teach english at a local high school. I'm not here to worry about technicalities of my grammar, I'm here to learn more about TL's and to help other TL owners when possible. But with you, I'm just having a ball messing with you. And your too dumb to realize it(no net rage there, just facts).
And I never said my car is the most awesome car in the world, I said that the car IS awesome. There are plenty of cars better and more capable than the TLS. And even awesome cars have flaws(look it up in the dictionary) since your having trouble with that word. Flaws doesn't mean the car sucks, or is incompetant, it just means that the car isn't perfect, but what car is perfect?? Try to take it all in petey, because your really having some trouble with the meanings of words that I use in my replies. Don't bother writing back because I'm pretty much done making you look like a fool. PEACE OUT BRO

You're a big help, for whatever degree of seriousness you'd like to take this with, you've made yourself look like a fool, ... I get a kick out of how you claim my posts don't bug you but you're still going to reply to this post, and then next one and the next one. Hey dude, let's talk about how fast the TL-S is and how it's the only more super awesome-est coolest most radical car in the world!! yeah!

If the damn things worked, NOBODY would be talking about them!!
How many posts are there about ANY OTHER FAILURE???
Answer: NONE
:-jon
Oblio, I agree with you man, and I feel terrible for those who had to go through the headache of replacing their trannies. But there are alot of posts of people who are paranoid about their trannies going out, and I am just stating that those paranoid posts stem from the fact that the tranny is talked about too much on this site.
I haven't read all the posts on this thread but PeterUbers, chill out. You don't have to talk down to someone when they disagree with you. You usually have some insightful stuff to add but to correct someone's grammer and say they have a grade school mentality is pretty weak. I'm not attacking you here but just chill out.
I agree our cars aren't perfect and that there are better cars out there but I do think our cars are AWESOME! I still love my car. I feel for y'all brovas who have had the tranny issues and it is always a concern of mine...at the same time I am trying to enjoy my car, which occasionally might involve breaking the law (just kidding if Pianoman41 is reading this
)
As for the hard shifting, mine is pretty smooth except when pushing it a little bit!
