Tranny Problem Census

Attn: All TL owners who've had tranny problems:
I say we start a thread to help determine any possible reasons for all the tranny problems. Please post on this thread if you've had problems.
Post:
1) Year of your car
2) Build date of you car(if you know)
3) How often you drove in SS or D5
4) How aggressively/conservatively you drove

as well as any other info u feel is relevant.
Hopefully we might be able to pinpoint some type of reason for the problems.

I'm concerned b/c while I have no problems yet, my cars got about 4700 miles on it and I'm worried hearing about all these premature tranny failures.

17,500 miles here and everything is still ok. I know you asked for people with premature tranny failures, but those people are far and few in between.

I don't mind hearing from people with good trannies, but with all the posts on this board of tranny failures/problems, it seems like 1/3 of tls are experiences tranny problems.
I just hope its not the case.

I know we've heard lots of people in this forum who have had transmission failures, but I still think it is a very small minority.

Mine was born in Feburary sometime, and I am very hard on it.
My milage is 13,000.

I usually redline it most of the time.
I've hit rev-limiter countless many of times.
I've pushed it out of gear many times during hard acceleration.
I down**** all the time while comming to a stop
I usually stay in SS, but many times I've held it to 7200RPM in D1.

So far not a single sign of failure. I cross my fingers after reading many of the posts on this forum, because if there is a problem I'm sure I will see it soon.

Mine tranny kicks sometimes between 1->2 and 2->3. Going to get it checked out when I get my oil changed.

1. 2002
2. 3/01
3. 90% in D5
4. Accelerate pretty aggresively, will enter VTEC but I rarely go over 5500 in normal driving.

Oh yeah, 4100 miles.

Except for the tall fourth gear, I'm really happy with the performance of this tranny. No problems. Sounds like DMan is doing his best to supplement Acura's Quality Control. My guess is it seems that most people on this forum are performance-oriented, so we would probably see more failures percentage wise than the general population.

I've always had a tendancy flog my manual trannies, with a lot of engine braking, hard down-shifts, etc., but I've always tended to "baby" auto transmissions. My impression, after about 8,000 miles, is that this one seems pretty tough, so far.

Hey I do the same right now... I'm not hoping, but if I do have problems I'm hoping it happens before my warranty is up. Knowing my luck it wil happen the same way as my Bimmer.

My tranny went out at about 8500 miles on my TLS. I don't know when it was built but I bought it 4/24. I now have 25,000 miles on it and haven't had any more problems.

I'm certain it doesn't have anything to do w/ driving style. Most of the miles I drove (about 90%?) were on the highway, cruising at about 2000 rpm in D5. As I've said before, I haven't driven this car any differently than any other car I've owned and I never had any tranny problems with those. I think this is just a matter of Acura receiving a bad batch of trannies.

And I wouldn't be so quick to say the problems are few and far between. Of the relatively few TLS owners there are on this board, I would say at least 6 have had tranny failures, one reporting that it took a while to get his new tranny because they were on back-order (not a good sign). Also, most TLS owners have very few miles on their cars so could more failures be coming? Probably so. I didn't really have much indication that my tranny was going bad. It seemed one day it drove fine, the next day it wouldn't move.

Dammit, My Car just died on me...I think it was the tranny because the car was having trouble shifting into second. It also wouldn't go into reverse. This sucks!!

1) 2002 TL-S
2) ?
3) 85% in D5
4) Moderately aggressive driving
5) 11000 miles

I am waiting for the verdict tomorrow, when the dealer tells me what exactly went wrong. I hope it's not too bad.
