Talking Tranny number one....

was just approved for a new tranny found out that one of my motor mounts were completely broken, so thrown one of those in also, 125 outta pocket. but im not complaining.

they said that this tranny an approved version of the current one that i had, wich solved the problem of overheating. ive done tons of searching before and i cant find an answer if they ever figured it out and if it is truelly a new and revised transmission and not just rebuilt ones or such.

also... while theyve got it apart should i have them replace or check anything else out.. not to mention im a broke ass student.. so i cant throw too much outta pocket. any help or comments would be greatly appreciated.. thanks guys!

performance acura in the rdu area is the dealership i went to by the way. very nice people there.

the revision tranny you are getting is in fact new and improved. i'm surprised it didn't pop up when you searched but the final revision was issued February of 2005 and seems to be bulletproof thus far. cooling passages have been enlarged, the friction materials have been improved, and other things i'm sure acura has not divulged. rest easy that this new one will last you a long time.

if they are replacing your motor mount then there is nothing else to throw in. once the tranny is out they may say that the tranny mount needs to be replaced too, but that one is only about $50 new.

just remember, bringing coffee and donuts to them in the morning when you drop the car off can go a long way towards reducing your bill or just making your next experience there all the more pleasant. especially if they have allready been good to you about getting the new tranny.

this may be true but i don't believe that we have had any *confirmed* failures from azine members yet. some people have said they had issues but i don't recall any true confirmations of failure. i could be mistaken though.

thats what mine is doing now. and you can hear it actually shifting loudly. esp from n to r but i hope the new one lasts me. i heard of acura using rebuilt trannys, is that true? do they still do that?

would using SS promote tranny wear. i just dont want to be replacing my third or fourth later down the road.

i was sooo close to selling and going to a cls manual. but i think i fell in love with it again.

thanks guys.

There is a thread here with confirmed dead replacements post 2/05, its a small thread- but it exist.
Mine was fine today of course- went for ride with Senior Tech at dealer driving- NPF

Soon as I got in to leave- it was being slow into gear again- oh well, just have to wait till it gets worse. They know me down there so it wont be a problem~

Tech said they have a no hassle policy about trans on lowered cars or intake/exhaust mods- the same things they sell over the parts counter they cant use against you.

Told him the story of the member with a Turbo- thats a little too big to overlook he laughed!

ice:
They have a company that does all their rebuilds
The one from your car goes in to that shop and gets stripped for useable parts
A NEW improved design case/housing is pulled off the shelf- new clutches and parts are installed with some used but good parts too. That makes it a rebuilt unit- not fully NEW, and off it goes to become someone elses replacement unit

thats good to know man. im gonna keep taking it easy on it when i get it back. i was almost afraid of them telling me no or its not showing the signs.

i kinda wanted to call the guy out, he tried to say that, they would cut me a deal since my warranty just expired, since i have 50,600 miles on her. but i bit my lip and appreciated there kindness, they did cut me a deal on the labor for the motor mounts....

ice, using SS does not promote tranny wear, and *supposedly* the loud n to r shift is normal.

01tl4tl - you're right. i had forgotten about that thread until you mentioned it. i went back to look at it though, and it sounds there are more slippage issues than clutchpack failures. either way i hope it's just a minority report and not a sign of things to come. i just got mine replaced for the 2nd time about a month ago. i love my tl to death, but if this happens again i'm trading it in for something else.

the sad part is that i've only had to replace the transmission and the IACV in the 112k miles i've had the car.

i guess my main question is. will i feel any shifting at all now?.

You'll still feel shifting no doubt but it will be a bit smoother. I believe 500 miles would be the break-in point.

just treat it normal to gentle- no racing anyone, no redlining without cause, no real fun for 500 miles--- then do what you want
Do test the SS mode to make sure it works up and down

In my chat with the tech today- who has been dealing with these cars for 15 years, on the replacements- the occassional valve body fails or the clutch pak goes on 3rd, like it used to.
Its rare but does indeed happen.

He is doing a home project with maching to fit more clutch disc packs together and use Kevlar for durability.
Thinks he can sell some on the internet- some!!!! gozillionaire more like it!

He said the key signs to watch for (NON Type S model only) are cruising at 35-45 light throttle and try to auto downshift with hard throttle
Trans goes thud thud thunk thunk slip looking for 3rd- thats the death warning

Didnt say what the tyype S signal is- sorry. Those must be the ones that go into 2nd gear on the freeway~
