Tranny Is Done For!

Damn never thought it would happen to me! Well yesterday my check engine light came on so i brought the car into the dealership(ACURA OF LYNNWOOD) this afternoon. they made me wait for an hour then told me everything was tip top and they figured it out. Something about a clutch code but it was OK. Well just about an hour ago i was on the hwy when the light comes right back on. so i got off my exit and when i stopped it the car jerked like 5 secs later like it didnt downshift yet. DAMN i know what this means! Sure nuff when i start driving foward it revs freely then..chirp it shifts into gear and then it revs all high until it jerks again into the next gear...damn i know this feeling, bye bye tranny. but this is my 99 tl with 40k on it, not a nitroused 88 mustang 5.0 with 115k!!! What a piecea sheeit! so what should i tell the dealer now?

Trannies are hard to come by too. When I had mine replaced, I settled for a used one(only 4k miles from wreck though), instead of waiting months for a REBUILT one. BUt that was like a year ago.

Do you guys think the car will ever be the same? Im thinking about getting rid of the car now. How long do you think it will take to fix it, the car is still under warranty, luckily. Thanks.

All this bad tranny stuff is starting to worry me. Does anyone know of any specific thing that is causing all these problems? My car is just a year old and i have 18,500 miles on the car but no problems yet.

Hey did you guys notice it slipping, like when you pull out into an intersection and step on it, it takes forever to go. I been complaining to the dealer about it for the last six months and since 15K. I have Acura client services involved now and there asking me to take it to another dealership....

Simply, crappy design and quality...

Either that they have really bad quality control (since this not isolated cases)

Or the design is $hitty to begin with...

If you can afford to get another car, then go for it. You never feel the same even the new tranny is as good as the old one. It's just the way people thinks and human nature I guess...

However, I do believe that if things are done right, then you shouldn't notice any REAL differences.

I have a 1998 Accord, which I believe has a similar tranny to the 99 TL, and it went @ 100,000 miles, way past warranty, and I dont drive the s@@t out of it. It was replaced about 3 months ago and the car drives like new and was replaced with a rebuilt unit.

BTW, I do not know how similar the trannys actually are, only that they are both 4 speed, mated to a similar engine.

My wife's 2001 TL only has 3000 mi on it. So, of course, the tran works beautifully.....
Since OEMs seldom admit to any defects, I suggest that we all contact a local independent trans repair shop(s); see what they have to say about Acura/Honda 4 & 5 speed automatics compared to other makes; then report back here with your findings.
I'll be back with something within a week.

If you guys don't know, Accord V6 also has a ton of tranny problems. The entire V6 Honda/Acura lines of cars have serious tranny problems (or quality control problems because they are made in US)! Below is a thread leading to a guy's complaint that his tranny on a 2000 Accord V6 got replaced at 4000 miles only. What kind of boo boo do you call that?!

Tranny Problem

I believe the problem is most severe with the 2000 TL as this is the year they went to a five speed. My 2000 TL Tranny died at 40,000 kms (24000 miles). At first Acura Canada would not admit that there was a problem, but after numerous calls to Customer Relations department I found out there were a lot of people waiting for replacement rebuilt transmissions. They told me the original transmissions are built in Japan. But when a transmission fails, they are sent to remanufacturing facility, and rebuilt with Acura parts in the US> There is a tremendous backlog for these rebuilt transmissions. After waiting 6 weeks , and missing 3 promised delivery dates, I bailed on my car, asking the dealer to give me a deal on a new TL. I am not so sure that the transmission problems have been rectified, as I am seeing people on this board having problems on their 2001 and 2002 TLs. In my case it is not a case of driving the car into the ground, I am 50 years old, and have never had a transmission problem until my 2000 TL. I think we have to keep one another posted about any information we may be able to find on these failing transmissions, so lets keep the thread going !

Honda/Acura is probably the most popular car owned in Berkeley, CA.
So I checked with 3 local independent Trans Repair shops. AAMCO, Wholesale Transmission, & LeeMyles Transmission. All report that Honda/Acura is no worse than any other. None can tie failures specifically to the V6. Most of their business is in Ford & Chrysler product. None had ever done repair on an Acura 5 speed automatic.

I think it's too soon for the problem to reach the independents, since the early failures get run thru dealer warrentee. I couldn't get clear repair history info from Oakland Acura. They don't stock any new trannys, but claim to be able to "get a factory rebuilt in 4 days". No new ones available. Hmm....that may be a clue.

The late model automatics are very complex (both 4 & 5-speed) , owe much of their slick performance to electronic control -- the PCM -- Powertrain Control Module. The factory shop manual devotes 235 pages to the 5-speed. So I doubt that dealer service could do any internal repairs. A new tranny probably has the same weak spots, but a factory rebuilt could have some beefed up innards......

Comments welcome.

Rebuilt Transmissions

When my tranny went , I had a lot of concerns. I found out that under warranty, Acura will not put in a new transmission, but a rebuilt. They say it is rebuilt at a remanufactre facility in the USA. As for no new transmissions being available, thats bull... they haven't stopped building cars yet due to a shortage of transmissions. As for availability of rebuilt trannys, neither the dealership or Acura Canada could tell me when a replacement transmission would be available. After many calls to Acura Customer Relations, I found out I was 16 th in line in Canada, but the main problem was that there were 152 backorders for rebuilt transmissions in the USA. Hence to trasnsmissions were being sent to Canada. Stay on top of Acura Customer Relations department, and work with the service manager at the dealership. With followup calls eveyday, maybe you can get a tranny quicker than I could.

Rebuilt Transmissions

I heard the reassuring line from both the service manager at the dealership, and Customer Relations, that the transmissions are rebuilt with original Acura parts, and the rebuilds are every bit as good as a new transmission. I just think Acura has a design problem in the transmission, and are trying to keep it quiet.I have not seen any recall notices for the transmision, and I think they are trying to deal with the problems as they occur.

The dealership told me they were putting in a brand new tranny and it was not a rebuild, they said they just had to wait for the tranny to get in and it would take them 1 day to put it in. I was thinking about bringing in a tranny cooler and having them put it on, but im having problems finding one.

The Tranny Mystery

Here's more info: I had a good talk with Berkeley Honda Service Mgr who didn't try to hide anything: They've replaced about 3 V6 trannys in 1 year. (All rebuilts) I calculated that was about 1% of the V6s serviced by the dealership.

The new 2002 Honda light SUV is coming with a 5-speed automatic. Note: It has an external replacable filter (in addition to the engine oil filter)....... That's gotta mean something.

I guess you guys know that the Honda site reports tranny stories, similar to Acura. Honda v6s still run 4-speed autos.

I wonder if the Acura engineers have been hanging out with the Ford engineers lately and been mislearning a thing or two.

WTF is your problem? Just cause your tranny died, do you have to try to bring up everything that is negative, even if it is close to a year old?

Quite frankly I am getting tired of you bashing Acura every chance you get. Grow the fvck up already. Nothing is ever perfect in life, including cars!
