Tranny #2......RIP

Just dropped off my 2003 TLS for tranny number three!

6849 miles and my car is going under the knife yet again.

Makes me wonder why I traded my 99.

I am on #3 on my 2002 TL with 40,000 miles. So far the third tranny is fine after 3000 miles.

Damn frustrating isn't it!

If it happens again you qualify for the lemon law in most states.

Man, and there are people here trying to say it happens to less than 2% of the cars. Or it happens to only modified cars. Bla Blah Blah. Don't know why they stick up blindly for Honda's/Acura's huge flaw! I went through 2 also on my 02. Acura sales are down also, 13% I think. They would be in trouble if not for the MDX.

You should've kept the 99.

BTW, sorry about your tranny problems. You should apply the lemon law if the 3rd tranny bites the dust.

Scott P., thought you said you were banned from the board? You sure have some colorful stories from the visor shipment, check clearing wait all the way to getting banned and popped back in eh?

Anyways, bust your #3 tranny and claim the lemon law. By then the 2004 TLS should be out...totally redesigned engine/body..hopefully you don't have to worry about this problem anymore...

Yes Jean-Pierre, I was banned thanks to you. Once Tim got the truth about the situation, everything was rectified. It was great doing business with you. Although, this is not the proper area for this discussion.

To me the only correlation I can make is if you have ever driven a stick shift and are just about to stall, but the car catches itself and jerks pretty hard. That is happening to me from 3rd to 4th and 4th to 5th.

It may be time to remove the K&N filter. I think that mod put my otherwise stock engine over the top.

No problems yet at 34K miles!

I have a 2002 TL-S with Comptech Headers and Sways. No problems at all. I'm over 34K miles and all of it hard-driving with most of it using SS.

Just another data point...

Wow, I never use SS and have changed my driving style to match that of a 90 year old woman going to church on Sunday.

You are pretty lucky.

randomwalk101, just as Scott posted above, this is *not* the appropriate place for this discussion. You both have email, Tim has email and any discussion about this should be kept between you. Please keep it off the forums.

Thanks.

I have an '03 just shy of 6K and I'm getting weird "slow-shifts" where it just seems to take the trans an unusually long time to make the gear change, usually from 3-4, sometimes 4-5. I don't know if that's what other people refer to as "slipping", to me slipping means the trans won't hold the gear. It doesn't feel right to me, though; my previous ride was my beloved 89 Prelude Si and it never felt like this. That trans had SportShift, too lol, had that 4th-3rd force down-shift button. Came in handy a couple of times.

Anyway, I'm waiting for it to dump so I can join the ****parade at the local Acura dealer (Motto: "Man, yours is the FIRST bad trans we've ever seen! Really!) but I'm wondering if there is ANYBODY who has gotten a replaced trans that DIDN'T subsequently fail also within 20k miles? All I see on here is repeat failures, usually within a few thousand miles. It's like Acura is just passing around the same bad transmissions like rubber checks. Since the problem is "solved" how can there be people with repeat failures?

Slyborg, I also have an'03 TLS that I bought in April, 02. I currently have just under 24k miles. At 22,500, my transmission failed and was replaced. I wouldn't say my gears shifted "slowly". I had very obvious slipping from 2-3, where it just would not go into gear. It suddenly failed when I was going onto the garden state parkway. I was already in 5th gear when the d5 light started blinking and the ! light came on. I also noticed very hard shifts when the car was cold, but was told that was "normal". I'm not really sure how to take your description of "slow" shifting, but supposedly our cars learn your driving style, so would that have anything to do with it? (don't take that the wrong way!!)

I was also told by the dealer that the transmission problem was solved by acura and that it was a bearing problem and that the first 5200 cars made in the '03 model year have the same problem as the 2002s. I'm not sure I believe that but I figured I'd share.

Question Lemon law question

Does anyone know if you buy your TL used, can the lemon law still be used?

Good question.. I do know that the dealership selling the vehicle is required by law to tell you that the transmission has been replaced and why that was so... I learned that from a member here on the board... wish I remembered his s/n so I could give him credit.

Well I would be buying from a private party or at an auction. However, I believe you can get warranty info from any dealer on any car (if they don't lie) or maybe directly from the manufacturer. I know that I checked up on warranty repairs on my Volvo S70 T5 before I bought it but don't remember how.

It depends state-to-state. I know in MA if you purchased used commerically it is protected under lemon law, but much shorter time and mileage.

Check with the by-laws of your state.
