Trading my 01 TL in...

I have an 01 TL with 122k on it in great condition with all service being done by Acura. I was just approved for an auto loan by my credit union today so I'll be picking up a 3rd gen TL next week. I have a Alpine headunit w/ Ipod adapter and Polk components installed in the doors. Obviously im not going to take the components out and try to trade the car in with holes in the door panels where the tweeters were, but should I take my headunit out? It obviously isnt going to affect the trade in value being offered. I dont plan on installing an aftermarket headunit in the 3rd gen, I just plan to hook my ipod up to the factory deck.

Is it realistic to expect to get $4k for my trade?

i would say HIGHLY unrealistic. dont quote me but i would say they offer you 2 or 3 at the most. unless youre buying from them again in which case, you have a bit more leverage. just be careful they dont get you somewhere else lol.

me personally i would take the headunit and ipod adapter out. especially if you still have the stock one.

Sell the car privately, you're going to take a hit on trading it in.

Expect the dealer to give you less then half private sale price.

I dont really have time to sell it locally thats the thing. It could take weeks and I need to get this taken care of this week.

I decided today that I'll be taking the headunit and Ipod adapter out and putting the factory back in.

As far as the trade in value, how can I only expect 2 or 3 grand when the kbb and edmunds quote is around $4500?

well the KBB is really no help when it comes to dealers...they dont even use that...when i traded in my 03 Galant for the TL my KBB quote was at 8,000 and i only got 5 or 6 grand...and that was pushing it becuz i knew the guy at the dealership so he got me a lil bump up...

heres a comparison... i was going to trade my 02 ABP TL-S with navi, oem kit and oem spoiler and 107k miles in last month for either a tsx or a honda accord... i was offered in the 4 thousand range for my car... they like to rip you off real hard... best bet is to sell a few thousand above trade in but a few thousand below kbb on private party and its a win win for all involved and should influence a quick sale for you.

by the way my tl is in great condition as well.. once youre over 100k miles the dealerships dont want your car and will offer you practically nothing for it regardless of its condition.

Definitely, private sale. If the dealer offers you 3k you could def. Sell it for 1 or 2 more k's. And for that price and if it looks good, someone will buy it quick.

I got a decent amount on my trade-in. A lot better than what craigslist people offered. Granted, I bought the car from the dealer so the trade-in was more of a leverage thing on the price of the TL I was buying.

I still owe $7k on it... thats the thing. Its all going to be wrapped into my new note, so if the dealer only gives me 3k then the other $4k will be rolled in with whatever the purchase price is for the car that Im buying.

I got another $2k bump up from my credit union today so I am going to look at a 04 with 45k miles and a 05 with 41k miles on Saturday and if I really like one I might pull the trigger...

Im happy that prices have come down so much recently. Im hoping to get the 05 since the trans talk makes me nervous with the 04, although I've driven my 01 TL hard and often and havent had one problem with the tranny .
