Post TLS vs. Eclipse GST- Help

I have an offer from a friend to race his 96 eclipse gst. The only mods his car has is that the psi on the turbo is higher, not sure by how much, but i think he mentioned about 10. Anyways, i wanted to get peoples opinions on the GST vs. tls . You think the tls will take it. And whats the best way to race the tls??

If he has a manual GS-T, uh-uh -- you ain't gunna win. He's got a lighter car, and can get a very good launch --> I've seen a GS-T drag a GS-R 'teg, an it's a pretty darn close until the turbo kicks in and the GS-T pulls moderately hard on the GS-R. And I know for a fact a GS-R will run with our TL-S's (had this experience recently). I think after about 80 or 90 mph, the TL-S will start to pull on the GS-T and overtake it.

I don't mean to be a magazine racer, but the GS-T's 0-60 is 6.6 seconds w/ a 15.3 1/4 mile (ala www.car-stats.com). I just think he'll get a better launch until you get some grippy tires on your Acura! Plus, you're saying that he's forcing higher induction than stock w/ the turbo tweaked. Good luck, and go kick some Mitsubish** Ass!!

Hm, I thought Eclipse/Talon turbo pressures are running 10-12 stock??? It would be interesting to see how Eclipse and TL-S race together....

I've recently raced my friends manual Eagle Talon (also 94 or 95 i believe) which is basically a rebadged Eclipse, and i slaughtered it. Yeah his car is lighter. And yeah its 4-wheel drive. And he had high perf tires. But with all that and my shitty stock tires, he could never come closer then 2 car-lengths once we were off and all the way to about 120. He's gonna chip it soon and also wants to put in a bigger turbo. Then we'll try again

I say go for it, you can do it! but if you've got stock rubber, dont floor it all the way off the start, cuz the tires wont grip. give it about 75% and when u feel u've got a grip then go for it. And also it helps to torque brake, cuz he sure will with a stick.

ok, minor correction... i just confirmed with my friend, and i was way off.. his talon is a 91, and those were actually faster than the later generation, as far as we both know.

D'you notice a better launch w/ brake torquing or w/ 75% throttle until grip -- then 100%?? I've been trying "master" (if you can call it that) the art of launching w/ these crappy *****elins, just want a second perspective. Thanx

Brake torquing will definitely give u a much better launch then being easy on the throttle. So really, u have to replace the tires, u'll be amazed at the difference it makes... i literally felt it being faster... and the more horses u have, the more u'll feel it. and, of course, don't forget to turn TSC off, that slows you down quiet a bit according to the GTech. Made a diff of .3sec, on the average, in my case.

But brake torquing really heats up the torque converter, so its not something u wanna keep doing, our cars werent designed with that in mind. It all comes down to changing the shitty rubber. Once you do, you can reserve the brake torquing for those special occasions when you wanna lose to an M5 with as much grace as possible

Makes sense. What kind of numbers did you post with your G-Tech -- I know you've had the unit for some time now -- plus -- what does a G-Tech look like and how does it work -- oh and how much , i may be interested in one when i start doing mods.

well, unlike all the other people who seem to be getting amazing sub 6 sec. numbers with it, i posted a measley best of 6.8 for 0-60 and 14.8 best 1/4. I blame most of it on the tires, and now that i have my new ones sitting in the living room (got them yesterday) i can't wait to put them on and see again.

The gtech looks like a really small radar detection unit on a single suction cup about 3x3x1/2" in size. I bought a brand new one from gtech and it cost $159 with shipping i think. u can get a "used" one as most people just try it a couple of times, before and after mods, and it then goes into that place where all useless car things go.

Forget being easy on the throttle. Just floor it and enjoy the ride, that's what traction control is for. With your auto you should get very repeatable numbers. Leave SS alone too, let the auto do it's thing, it does a great job of nailing the shift points. Just keep your eyes on the rearview so you can see his expression! ;-)
